Thoughts & Prayers For My Mom And Her Husband

My mom’s husband was a lifetime smoker and several years ago it caught up to him. He had to go on disability and have a constant supply of oxygen wherever he went. Shortly before Thanksgiving, his doctors found a mass on his lungs and scheduled him for a biopsy. Unfortunatly, before Thanksgiving he had an incident where he couldn’t get enough oxygen and had to be rushed to the hospital. While there, they found out that the mass was cancer afterall and that coupled with his lifetime of smoking, there is nothing much that can be done. He has been in the hospital ever since and unfortunately he’s not long for this world. He is a man of faith, so I’m sure he will be going to a better place but in the meantime it is a very slow and painful death.

My mom is holding up fairly well, but everything is taking a toll on her health. She already has a very bad back and working 9 hours a day then going to the hospital and back to her house is wearing her out. They need to update his will because right now everything will go to his daughters but she just never has time to get it done. Hopefully, she can get it done before it’s too late or she won’t be left with much. It’s bad enough to loose someone you’ve been with for almost 20 years but the aftermath can be just as bad. Also my mom has never been alone in a long time. After her and my dad divorced, we were living with her. Not long after she met Larry, she moved in with him along with my sister (I ended up living with my dad). When my sister and his daughters moved out they stayed together up til now. I know that once he’s gone she will be living alone and I know that it will be hard to adjust.

As well as thoughts and prayers for them, keep his daughters in those as well. His oldest will be alright, she is very strong, but my mom is worried that his youngest is not ready to face the inevitable. She lost a husband many years ago and has a son with a severe case of bi-polar disorder and this has the capability to send her over the edge.

Thoughts and prayers for your family. And for your strength too, sounds like your family is going to need you to be there for them. Is your mom nearby?

She's about an hour and a half drive from here. I will vistit whenever I can. Luckily, my sister and Larry's daughters don't live that far and are able to visit daily.

Ugh ! Sorry to hear that. I lost my dad many many years ago to lung cancer. He was a smoker plus he worked in a foundry breathing in all that mill dust (and years before I was born,he was a coal miner). He had pneumonia the year before he passed on and never fully recovered. By the time the cancer was discovered, it had spread through his body. From diagnosis to death, 3 months. It was quite shocking. You have my thoughts and prayers, my friend.

They pretty much confirmed that his cancer is incurable. He has been moved home because he doesn't want to die in a hospital (can't blame him, I wouldn't want that either). That can be stressful for my mom, but apparently his youngest daughter is staying there to help out.

Well, sadly, Larry passed away today. My mom says it was very peacefully. I'm over here with the rest of the family to comfort each other. I was strangely distant on my drive over here but once I got here and saw the sorrow in everyone's faces emotions surfaced. I didn't always get along with Larry. As a matter of fact he could be downright agrivating at times. However, he was civil toward me most of the time and is does saddened me to see him go. However, there is greater comfort found in the fact that his suffering is over and he is in a far better place. Everyone is mourning but coping well, except the dog. Frank is barely eating and while usually a very overly energetic is very lethargic. Funny how animals know what's going on, they can sense when their masters are gone without being anywhere near them. Also older animals sometimes go shortly after. This might not happen though as now he is finally eating (though just scraps and treats) but still not willing to get up and move around.

Truly sorry to hear that. My condolences

The funeral will be Tuesday with a viewing Monday. I will go to the former for sure but no way I will go to the latter. I don't go near dead bodies if I can help it. Not only does it freak me out, there is nothing there but a shell. When a person dies, I believe that the real person (the soul) leaves and is gone, it's no longer them. Plus, as my dad says, it's best to remember someone as you last saw them when they were alive. I agree with that because while I still remember the good times I had with my best friend Erik, I will always forever see his dead body as I came upon it the morning after. As much as I try to forget that image it never leaves me when I think of him.
