Escape Rooms

Have any of you ever tried this? My boss just signed us up for one and while I normally blow off "teambuilding events" I think this sounds like fun.

I love puzzles and figuring stuff out based on clues (hell, it's what I do for a living) so this seems like a blast to me. I know these things are really getting quite popular so I'm curious if any of you have been to one.

Not me. There is one within a few miles of my work and I'd love to try it.

Do you know what the theme of the room is yet?

This sort of thing was always my favorite part of the Zelda video games; figuring out how to get out of a room, or into one. I'm pretty good at puzzles and codebreaking but I'll probably suck at this. It still sounds like fun though.

Not yet.  My boss just signed us up late this afternoon.  It was funny because she specifically sent me a PM asking if I'd do this one because I'm notorious for hating team events.

They've done zip lines. paintball, laser tag...all of which I blew off. That stuff would have been great 20 years ago but to me those events just sound like a new way for me to get hurt now.

Plus I think this "escape room" concept TOTALLY makes sense for my team. I'm in production support; we have a queue that our international help desk fills up with incidents phoned in from the field and it's our job to A) figure out a workaround or datafix and B) hopefully identify the root cause and assign it out to the appropriate team.

So working together as a team to piece together clues and puzzle stuff out makes complete sense as a "teambuilding exercise". Plus it sounds like a hell of a lot of fun to me.

I just saw that one of the themes the St Louis location does is "your team is on an archeological expedition and you've become sealed in a mummy's tomb". If she asks for a vote I'm voting for that one.

We were just talking about these escape rooms tonight.My Daughter just got back from church camp and said they did one there. It sounds like fun. Then I get on here and see your thread.

Our event is scheduled for September. We're going to vote on what scenario to use this coming Monday during our weekly team meeting.

Toho votes for the Gojira room.

I think there is a mummy's tomb scenario though so that would be close enough.

i loved the escape room outing we did as a group. Lots of fun and it was interesting to see the different ways people think (or dont)

They are really big in East Asia, but I haven't been to one before. I'll be curious to hear about the experience.

I wanted to go last summer, but my friends weren't interested, and the last thing I want is to get locked into one with my wife.

I will.

We're already conspiring about who we're going to throw off the escape boat (assuming we get that far).  There's someone on our team who hasn't been pulling her weight for a long time and we want to make her a sacrificial offering to the Volcano God if our boat can't hold everyone.

One guy said we should sacrifice her to the god before we even get to the island just for good luck.

Naturally I'm the one who started this discussion about who to leave behind.  

We're going to be on a 60 minute timer and I don't want any big debates about who must die so the rest of us can be saved...Hey just making contingency plans.

Yeah, I've got one of those crappy days coming up! Usually I'd say that it beats working but I also did it last year and it doesn't. The Brits rarely go in for this kind of nonsense, unfortunately I work for Americans!

my company does service projects - ie building playgrounds locally, packing at foodbanks, renovating schools, etc followed by lots of drinking. Pretty good concept overall and it tends to keep the cheesiness to a minimum.

I could get behind something like that much more than stupid trust falls or other role-playing nonsense "teambuilding" usually entails. Hell, that actually gives me an idea. At least half of my team is big into animal welfare so I might suggest our next "teambuilding event" be volunteering at Humane Society Of Missouri.
