I'm not usually impulsive, but after seeing the Geico Ice-T/Lemonade commercial and seeing Ice-T sitting there with an old-school cassette player/radio I got all nostalgic and bought one. I still have 50-60 old cassettes and I sometimes listen to them at home, but I like the idea of being mobile. So happy! It's not one from the 80's, so not as truly cool, but it does the trick.

Ha! I'm actually on the lookout for one of those myself ... My 9 year old recently discovered the remnants of my tape stash in the closet and he's fascinated by them.... But I don't have a cassette player for him to play them on!
I hit up the local Goodwill every other week or so to look thru the CDs so now I'm keeping an eye peeled for an old school cassette player/boom box when I'm there too... If I can find one I told my kid he can have the whole heap of tapes.

I still have one of those big ghetto blasters from the 80's. Bought it at a yard sale years ago & had to replace the hinge on the door. The radio tuner doesn't work that well, but the cassette deck still works great.
I have several hundred cassettes.

I actually still have one of my old Sony Walkmans and my turntable is a Crosley 5 in 1 that plays cassettes. I still have a hundred tapes or so.

Remember when the record companies were afraid that double-cassette decks would destroy the music business? That idea seems almost quaint now.
Good times, good times.

I've just recently begun to get back into cassette buying. My most recent purchase being a thai import cassette of Gazebo's "Best Of" (official). My primary player is Sony's last walkman to be released on the market in the early-mid 2000's, which is the orange and white WM-FS222 model. Very handy and yes, brand does make a difference, with the Japanese ones being the best in terms of reliability and sound quality. I've heard cheap ones that sound like shit, too much noise.
As for my Sony Walkman, it's worth having and ironically enough I've seen this same one from time to time at thrift shops. May pick those up regardless of whether they work just for replacement parts because that's how much I value it.
Thailand is actually one of the few companies still producing cassettes officially for the mass market. They were always pretty well into them. They have a deal with Sony and the thai label BEC Tero to release cassette copies of modern albums in the country, for which I own one of them by a Japanese group (L'Arc-en-Ciel). However, some modern artists in the west are catching on to the cassette trend like Twentyonepilot's recent album Blurryface, though not as much as vinyl.

I don't really remember any of my peers/ friends railing against the evils of dubbing tapes back in the day the way there was a backlash against file sharing in the 2000's. We were all pretty poor and had crap allowances so it was either a dubbed copy from a friend or you were waiting a looong time to get it. The way I felt then was that if they didn't want people copying then don't create a machine that can easily do it. I remember one particular record store employee crying about this back in the day but then he was always the one to push a blank cassette purchase on you as an add on sale.

Yeah there was a time when I bought Maxell blank cassettes by the case. Mainly so I'd have something to listen to on my Walkman. But I also traded mix tapes with friends in other states. "Check out these cool bands I discovered!"
Seems so primitive now and hard to believe it really wasn't that long ago.

Back in the tape your vinyl to listen to in the car deck days that I used to do. I had tons of those tapes too. Metal grew like crazy from all us making copies of albums for friends. Increased album sales... Lars seems to forget that Metallica got out of the underground through the recording of albums for a friend!

When I got my first new car in the early 90s, it still only had a cassette deck (a CD player woulda been more $$$) so I had to make tapes of my CDs to listen to in the car. After a while I had a big copy-paper box on my back seat that was overflowing with tapes. Whenever I was stopped at a red light, I would just reach behind me and grab a tape at random, pop it in and see what I got. It was like playing roulette.
