I understand the frustration of putting Kansas and REO in the same category but I think early Styx (like through Equinox or maybe even Grand Illusion) share some of the same musical characteristics. Unlike REO who have never had any prog leanings whatsoever.
I dunno. Styx is more 'prog-lite' in my eyes, if that makes any sense, where Kansas definitely had tons of songs that I would say reside more in that bombastic, classic prog realm (that should be considered some of the genre's best works, along with bands like Yes, Genesis, Floyd, etc.). Though that could just be a product of my perception of Kansas' and Styx's music.

I really dug it too and I'm still new to the game but so far my faves are Droid Bishop & Lazerhawk.

What are your thoughts on Ambrosia? They definitely had a Prog side and a Pop side. It's just that the pop side won when the hits started happening.

I need to listen to more of their stuff, but I love their debut. And what you shared with me on facebook from their last album seemed very promising, too. I like their general sound a lot, though. That mixing of power pop and prog didn't seem to happen too often.

A blast from the Toho archives:
I'll always love a "chugga, chugga" guitar riff!

That's a fair enough assessment. I actually agree. The fact that I like early Styx more than Kansas just supports the "prog-lite" tag because I don't like a lot of prog rock. For me, true "prog" just contains too much "noodling" and not enough melody; generally speaking.
Probably explains why my favorite "prog" bands are artists like Royal Hunt and Shadow Gallery.
Love me some Floyd though. That's probably due more to collegiate memories than the actual music though.

Oh, I dig Royal Hunt and Shadow Gallery too. They're definitely different beasts than the classic prog acts that inspired them, like you said.
and I like to believe that everybody likes being high as a kite & listening to Floyd, hahah.
