One of my all-time faves for sure, I own about 60 albums by him. Nice avatar, Boris, I'll change my av when I get home.
Sorry I didn't post more details earlier but I was in a meeting.

Wow. What a great musician. I can say that as a fan of metal in the 80's I hated just about everything remotely "pop" sounding with the exception of Michael Jackson and Prince. Purple Rain, 1999, Around The World In A Day, all great stuff. Even his stuff with the New Power Generation is fantastic, have always loved his music.
He always seemed (at least to me) to be in very great health. He was always fit looking and ran around on the stage.
One thing I will say about me is this -- typically when I see a live show and I don't know any of the songs I have a hard time getting into the show. I have a Prince DVD and when I looked at it I thought "this is probably crap, I don't know any of the songs". I have to say it is one of the most enjoyable DVD's I own. R.I.P. Prince.
(As a side note, now that I am older I love 80's pop).

A great musician and performer. This is terrible news! He was a true artist, right up there with Bowie. This year is like a curse...

That's a dynamite video post ! How strange...his passing - was close to that of Vanity's. I'd dig seeing a few more videos of favorite clips by others He was MTV huge - and shied away from the movie Purple Rain - " The artist formely known as Prince " was a wild moment too in his career - Again, surprising - and something sad, 56 is rather young -

Never was a big fan but there's no denying the talent of the man. Musician, singer, songwriter and producer.
They had a music historian on the news today who told a story I'd never heard before. Prince happened to be on a plane with The Bangles long before they ever had a hit; he was in first class and naturally The Bangles were back in coach. One of the Bangles sneaked into first class just to tell Prince what a huge fan of his they all were. After thanking her she left and Prince started writing on a napkin. He handed it to a stewardess and asked her to take it back to the Bangles. On the napkin he wrote "I wrote a song for you" and the song was "Manic Monday". They called him later for the chords and it became their first huge hit. And he's not even properly credited; the song is attributed to "Christopher" as in "Christoper Robin", one of his songwriting pseudonyms.
I thought that was a cool story. I knew he'd written songs for other artists but I had no idea he'd written that one.
RIP.

call me a wimp and a poseur if you like, but my favorite prince-penned song is Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2U, if I'm being honest.
I don't want to just use his death as a springboard for me to get deeper into his music, but I'd always debated buying Purple Rain when I saw it in the 5 dollar bin at Walmart. Next time I've got the cash, I think I'll finally do that.

I'm not the kind that thinks a musician's most popular album is their best but with Purple Rain nothing tops it and is one of the greatest albums of all time.

I have these sort of weird moments and I don't know how to clarify what they are, but they consist of people I haven't thought about for a while, but then I have these intense thoughts about them for a better part of a few minutes (perhaps longer) and then those thoughts are completely forgotten. It's like, when you think about someone you have not thought about for a super long time and then the phone rings and it's them, except they are stranger...
For instance, last night I'm listening to the Winger song "So Long China", because I had forgotten that album even came out. I must have listened to that song three times, but immediately thought of Chyna the wrestler, not the country. I "wondered" what she was up to while thinking about her for a few minutes and then those thoughts just went away. Then last weekend, I noticed that "Purple Rain" was on AMC (I think it was that station). I hadn't seen that movie in ages and hadn't really thought about Prince all that much recently. On Tuesday night, I'm talking about what my favorite Beatles song is and it happens to be "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". I love it because of the solo, which I told my friends was written by Eric Clapton. That led to a discussion about Prince laying down an unbelievable solo to that song for the Tribute in 2004. Anyways, this shit just sort of freaks me out.
R.I.P. Chyna R.I.P. Prince

Crap!
I really was hoping it wouldn't be something like this. And it may still not be. I always thought Prince was totally anti-drug so even if this story is true it might just be due to an interaction of prescriptions he was taking. Still...
