| Has anyone else experienced this? Modern CDs tend to have better build quality which prevents this as long as possible, but for early stuff circa 80's-early 90's that wasn't so. I already had two Ratt CDs from that era with pinholes from disc rot, as is to be expected for the older releases. Of course some I've listened to straight through and they never skipped at all, but it is much worse for those that experience a more severe effect called 'bronzing'. Has anyone here seen this? | |

| I can't say that I have. But then again I haven't ever really gone back to look through my collection. Plus, most stuff that is older releases, I inspect before purchase online or in person. I listen to music mostly on my computer (Like right now) or CDR comps in the car I made from music stored on my computer. | |

| From what I can gather, bronzing was caused by poor practice by one plant in the U.K between '88 and '93 and if your CD's haven't shown the effects by now they never will. Don't know much about CD rot. | |

| Not sure if it's that same deal, but I've been to flea markets and seen dealers that had cds that are damaged from too much direct sunlight exposure. Not only is the booklet faded and discolored, but the discs themselves can appear cracked, speckled or faded.
I have several cds from the 80's and 90's and haven't had any issues with them related to age. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

| Nothing by way of disc rot. The only titles in my collection that are even in rough shape are ex-library titles that had seen some serious mileage or the odd title that was packaged in one of those cardboard envelope style packages, but where some mental giant also saw fit to put one of those up-raised rectangular anti-theft tags INSIDE the envelope with the disc. Oddly, the scratches seemed to make the reflective layer pull up at certain points, so it looks like there's a scratch on the disc, but there's nothing wrong with the "shiny side" if you really closely examine it.
Not one of my favorite packaging tricks. A close second are those morons who put those anti-theft tags directly on the under-tray insert, leading to many a torn insert.

| The 1987 Elektra reissue of Kill 'Em All has this problem, but it actually still plays (at least last time I tried it a few years ago).

I have no idea. Maybe there's some kind of bugs inside the disc haha. _________________

| Ya know this also makes me wonder about DVD-R. I bought a DVD recorder so I could convert our VHS tape home videos of the kids. I am still nowhere near being done but some of them I did years ago. I haven't watched them in ages but I wonder if this disc-rot can happen to DVD-Rs? This technology is supposed to be better and last longer.... I'm glad I didn't ditch the VHS tapes just in case. I prob should go and check my home DVD's soon to make sure they still play.... The reason this comes to mind is because when my 13 year old daughter was very small I used to use the DVD recorder to record her favorite Nick Toons. Now that she is 13 and our youngest is 5 both of them want to see those old DVD-R's and some of them will not play.... Some will, some won't. Makes me wonder if it is the type, brand, and where it is made.
I read on a forum a few years ago about someone saying the ONLY CD's and DVD's to buy were Verbatim with the "blue" looking bottom. These wouldn't lose memory and were not Made In China. I used to buy them but haven't seen them in a long time (nor have I looked for DVD-R's in a long time, I just don't copy them anymore or make cartoon discs for the kids since everything they want is On Demand or Netflix).
