big bands mostly. Those common to the average fan... Much of what is being mentioned wouldn't qualify, I'd say. This thread has been more of a "favorites of 2014" or "what 2014 releases did you buy, in general" type of thing. Which is fine with me. Because I don't think I bought any of the more major metal/rock releases this year. The most major one would've been Ace's Space Invader. And Bruce Springsteen is pretty major, but not metal.

| I think that albums by bands like judas priest, iced earth, riot v, primal fear, accept, sanctuary and grave digger do qualify as major. Of course, some bands will be subject To debate.having said that, I could have titled the topic "most awaited releases you picked up in 2014". But pardon my bad english :-) | |

| I tried listening to the new Exodus again this morning. There is something that bugs me. Pretty much every thrash record in the past several years--maybe this whole millennium even?--have a weird, I don't know, sound. They all have them. New records by old bands. New, young bands. I don't know the technical aspects of music, so I don't know how to explain or what to call it, but it's the musical equivalent of a current horror/slasher movie being made as a retro/throwback/homage to the 70s/80s movies, and even though it is done well, it will always be plainly evident that it was made with a 21st century sensibility and equipment and technique and effects. Make any sense? The old thrash records don't have the sound I'm referring to.
And I guess I should throw out my short list of all releases I bought this year, major or not. Which is not many, though I have listened to most of the actual major releases on Spotify. -Bruce Springsteen- High Hopes -Bruce Springsteen- the RSD EP, but I bought the MP3 version -Battle Ruins LP -Boston Strangler- Fire LP -Ace Frehley- Space Invader
That might be it. I still need to buy the Kix record and She & Him's classics, which I dig quite a bit. I'm hoping for the new 6-disc Bob Dylan Basement Tapes for Christmas...but I don't know if that'd qualify, since it's old material.

I hear ya. It's overproduced and compressed, really. Those old beloved thrash classics usually had either a poor yet endearing mix, or an even, full, yet somewhat dry mix. Everything today is very goopy, saturated in bottom end and this comically big drum sound. I'm happier with how Exodus turned out compared to a lot of the pack. Another favorite was Death Angel's album last year. But they're still far from ideal, and for me listener's fatigue usually seems to click on about four tracks in.
