Thanks to the inter-web thingy and folks with entitlement issues.
There is a lot more to the story than that, the way the record labels responded to the internet (head in sand, praying it would go away) is as much to blame for the current state of things.
Regardless, even if they anticipated things and adjusted to the coming technology. Would that still have eliminated those with entitlement issues ? There are not very many music listeners (notice I didn't state consumers) who are gonna purchase a download if they can visit www.musicthieves.net and get it for free.
Maybe I didn't notice before, but recently on some music sharing forums, there are a ton of new members, usually teens or in their 20s, that don't share anything, (most members hope Out Of print releases will be shared), but want brand new albums ripped in FLAC or WAV (which is almost the same quality as your bought copy). I didn't care too much before, because i thought everybody was like me, and bought records if they liked a downloaded album a lot; but when I see a couple of albums wanted in high quality, released by small record labels that recently went out of business(!), it dawned on me, they went broke because of jerks like these.
I don't request uploads of brand new records, but I will search for a download link (if my curiosity can't be quelled by some YouTube videos), until I give up and then make a decision if I want to take a chance buying an LP, based solely on a couple songs on YouTube.
and Mega BASS on my Sony Discman in the early 1990s did make the music sound 100% better, especially Black Sabbath CD's.

I think I'm starting to come around on this whole "entitlement" thing ballooning like an over-the-hill prom queen at a late night buffet...
The "too long; didn't read" version is that law students in SEVERAL bigtime colleges are requesting that they either have finals put off or more or less not be graded in general in light of the events in Ferguson, etc.
There was another one that was just kind of disturbing about law schools starting to waffle about covering rape laws because the material might be "triggering" to law students.
On the up-swing, it means that when I'm old, I'll be surrounded by idiot man and woman babies afraid of their own shadow and I'll be able to act with impunity. This might also serve to cut down on the sheer number of stupid lawsuits in the pipeline - but it does make me think that Hunter S. Thompson called the whole "Generation of the Doomed" thing a few decades too early.
So yeah, stolen music is just the tip of that particularly whiny iceberg as it seems.

I'm not going to lie. I was in a meeting last week in work and it looked as if things where going to end badly, they didn't and things are now back on track.
During the whole event, I was thinking, well, if things go totally wrong here, I can always try that dream job of on line music store. The figures above make me even more happy that I was at least, in the right frame of mind for having a hope that it would work out.
As it stands, I didn't panic, I kept cool and just kept thinking, well, if this goes wrong, at least I have that to try and make work. Who'de of thought, that saved me from a 17 year career ending badly.

Nielsen just released their domestic music report for 2014 and yes, sales of CDs continue to go down the crapper while streaming is EXPLODING in popularity.
Sales of Compact Discs - Down 15% (selling 25 million less than 2013)
Digital album sales (downloads) - Down 10%
LP sales increased 52% from 6.1 million sold in 2013 to 9.2 million 2014. Sales of vinyl albums now constitute 6% of all physical media sold (it was only 1% back in 2011).
Streaming? Up a whopping 54.5%, 163.9 Billion songs were streamed in 2014.
Only 2 albums went platinum in 2014; the Frozen soundtrack and Taylor Swift's 1989.

I'd say, don't plan on making a lucrative career in music sales without touring your butt off.

When Best Buy goes from rows of CDs and DVDs to just small sections in their stores you have to know that this the new reality.... it just is and no amount of complaining will bring it back....
Hollywood wants you to stream movies and pay for it, not too own the physical product because there is no residual revenue stream.... they don't want to get screwed like the labels have done to the artists...
Streaming is reality and it will continue to expand.... FYE is closing shops in my area.... Anyone remember Borders Books and MUSIC...gone.... Physical product wont completely disappear but as the primary method of receiving it, history....
