Had many family members over for hot dogs and fireworks. A fun time had by all though the fireworks were cut short when it turned out my mom's house was within city limits (the cut-off line was two houses down the street). However, the police officer just gave us a warning and we enjoyed the rest of the night. Toward the end it was just me, my mom, my sister, and her fiance Craig and we were winding it down and ready for a day at the water park the next day. My sister goes in to use the bathroom before they leave then comes out and huredly calls for Craig.
The toilets are overflowing, the bathtubs are full, and there is water all over the place. There was a block somewhere that caused water to flood both bathrooms. This is around midnight so it was almost $500 for a plumber visit. While we are waiting, Craig and I get my mom's 9 gallon shop vac and start sucking out water from the most flooded bathroom. We make about 10 trips before the water level finally comes down. Turns out one of the pipes had tree roots grown into them causing the blockage. On Monday, the plumber comes to replace the pipe and set the roots back with a cost of $1400. Also there is water damage to the tune of thousands of dollars, but due to my mom's insurance will only cost $1000. They will have to replace the carpet in two areas, replace all the flooring and wallpaper in both bathrooms, and possibly re-do all the bathroom cabinets. We're looking at at least a week of repairs to the house, loud fans, and a nervous cat (who will be locked in my room while the workers are here).
This house is getting to be too much for my mom and she had to have the same thing happen to the house back in 2008. Craig and my sister have convinced her it is time to move out. There is a lot of work ahead for this to happen and my days off will have to more busy and less lazy, but my comfort can be sacrificed for the sake of the woman who gave me life.
So in short, I hope everyone's 4th was better than ours.
