| This thread has me firing up the Stephen King. I haven't read him in ages so I'm going to start with Salem's Lot (found it in the library at work, so I'll save it for bed-time reading). | |

Mr.s Todd's Shortcut was awesome! It was interesting, then just took a sharp left turn out of nowhere, when Mr.s Todd and Homer went on that shortcut to Bangor. Never saw that coming. Very cool tale. Yes, that one was very cool. All of those stories were. It was like the first album by a young and hungry band.

One of the best vampire stories Ive read. It's very good no doubt, but King's vampires in that book were..... lacking a certain somthing. Vampires are all about teh sexy, but King bypassed that angle completely. From what I've read, he knew it at the time but he just didn't didn't know how to work it in. I'd love to see him take a stab at a classic vampire tale now, but I doubt he would.

| As for reeding...
I play the sax; alto, tenor, bari. Baritone being my number 1 choice. If I could get my hands on a Bass or even the almost rare Contrabass, it would be like a trip to Heaven.
I've dabbled in clarinet, but nothing lower than a Bflat clarinet.
For all the saxophones I use Vandorean size 4 reeds. Never use Rico, they suck. For the clarinet, I've used size 2 and size 5, no preference.

King talks about it in the introduction. Says that it was very tough story to get published because of the subject matter.

Finished Salem's Lot. Very good indeed. Would like to see this done with a modern big budget and Kings' oversight. TT - I'd say there was some of "teh sexy" but it was very subtle and under the surface. Not much but some.

| I always loved KING's short stories.... "Beachworld" "I Am The Doorway" "Grey Matter" "Survivor Type" "Here There Be Tygers" are my faves... I really liked SALEM'S LOT, because it eschewed the sexy angle...it was small town USA...and I felt that added alot of believeability to it, rather than a bunch of bumpkins turned bloodsuckers trying to bump the fuzz with everything... _________________ "Oh man, I need TV? They did a tv mini-series a few years ago, but I never saw it, so I have no idea if it's any good. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%27Salem%27s_Lot_%282004_TV_mini-series%29 Anyhoo, I'm in the beginning of reading Slash's autobiography "Slash". Pretty decent so far, but I haven't read anything that revealing that most hard-core fans don't already know. Maybe it will get juicier as it goes deeper. | |

| Stephen King - The Mist (read this for first time in 15-20 years because I recently saw the movie. Give movie credit for doing a GREAT job despite wildly different ending - which IS hinted at for a second in the novella) Stephen King - Everything's Eventual - Pretty strong collection of short stories. Didn't read the Dark Tower one because I'm saving ALL of that for the plunge I'm going to take soon into that whole World. I've waited 20+ years to do this (even as a kid I didn't want to be held captive by what was going to be a decades-long project). I also didn't read 1408 as I'd seen the movie too recently and thought it was so-so. Now reading: House Of Leaves - Danielewski - I'm currently about 1/4 of the way through this. TallT - you mentioned "Teh Sexy" was lacking in Salem's Lot....not in this!! Good so far, though annoying in how it's set up. I'ma meat & potatoes guy with movies, music and books so all the little weird upside-down and annotated sections are tedious. | |

Everything's Eventual is great; I really dug that one. I also skipped the Dark Tower story. Not sure if I'll ever read the series, though. King's books drive me mad sometimes, and that's a large time investment. It says you can read the DT short without having read the books, but I don't know. Up next I have another short story collection to read. I was going to read King's Nightmares & Dreamscapes, but a guy I work with gave me Enough Rope by Lawrence Block. I've read a few of the shorter stories and they're damn good. So I'm going to tackle this one first. It's massive, though! Hardcover size, nearly 900 pages, and 84 stories. That's a lot of stories! Haha.

| Yeah, I noticed that too about the DT short (that it stands alone) but I'm just not ready to take the plunge.
Have you seen The Mist yet?

Have you seen The Mist yet? Caught me in edit mode. I haven't seen "The Mist" yet, but I unfortunately know one of the big changes with the end of the movie. Overheard that once. I'll watch it sometime, though. I really just started it. It's just the day after the first storm; they just saw the mist for the first time across the lake. |

I think that has less to do with him personally and more to do with the person reading the book to him. |

| Finished House Of Leaves
Started out strong but slowly just petered out. I got really annoyed with the weird sideways and upside down and single sentence/word pages.
The ending was weak and just tailed off. I know what it was trying to do...but I got bogged down with it.
I think this is one case where the best parts could be boiled down into a good movie.

| Not done yet. They just saw the tentacles by the loading dock. I read slow. Actually, I don't read slow, I just don't read often. I read a chapter while taking a dump, or a page or two between commercials. I rarely sit down and do marathon reading sessions like I used to. I have too much crap going on. |
