What are some cases where you prefer a side project featuring a band member to the actual work by the band? I dont mean cases where the member leaves the band for a solo project, just side projects.

James LaBrie's work outside of DT keeps getting better and better. Impermanent Resonance is a brilliant release, and his previous albums contained very well-crafted modern metal. His main band evoke bad feelings in me though. Leather Leone's Shock Ways I enjoyed more than Chastain then-recent For Those Who Dare; its on par with David's best material. Can't think of any more to be honest. My musical preferences lie in the one-and-gone field usually, sadly

Dave Grohl's PROBOT record is my favorite work of his.

Hellfire Club and Rocket Ride are Edguy's best, and they're better than all the Avantasia albums.

Star One is better than Ayreon. I don't know if it counts though, since Ayreon isn't a band either.

Neither are "metal" but as much as I like Clutch, The Company Band has some pretty good chops. As much as I love Alice in Chains I still spin Mad Season's "Above" more than any AIC discs….
