Dallas Black: TTFN

I've had many good years (with some clashes with other members-who hasn't?) on HoM. I consider this a haven for me and the members as friends. I have had many ups and downs and I've shared them all here. However, my downs have distracted me and I think I'm going to take a hiatus from here. Of course, since my trucking started I have been here sparingly anyways so it's not like I'm here on a regular basis. Right now, my truck driving future is very much in doubt and I don't know what I will do if it's over. Either way while the next few months of my life play out, I will not be around here

I don't know when I will return or if it will be under a new account, but I won't be here for a while (for the next day or so I will check responses to this thread). I'm taking time off to be alone with my thoughts and do a lot of soul searching. I want to thank everybody for the time I've spent here. I've made some of you laugh and some of you angry, and it has been returned in kind. I will leave my account open (providing the Mods don't mind) if anyone of you want to PM me for any reason. Thanks everybody and as the abbreviation in the title says, "Ta ta for now".

Well it's a shame your going to leave but I really do think you need a break from here and get stuff straightened out in your personal life. I just couldn't keep up with your other post about your job and I didn't want to get involved and say more than I have said in another thread hahaha. Anyway man, take care if yourself and hopefully you will find something you can really be proud if doing. Take care and see you back here soon hopefully with good news for a change.

DB I truly hope things work out for you. I've had plenty of experiences in my life that ended up being dead-ends, but that usually leaves the path open to something new and often better. Best of luck.

Some advice, DB: Stop trying to force things. Find the things you love in life and pursue them. Take time off, do a little of that soul searching, and figure it all out.

Sorry things haven't worked out as you've hoped. Trust me though, as someone who has had to regroup & start over many a time... sh*t will come together for you. Just take your time & find something that comes natural to you.

If you need time man, take it and try to work out what you want from life and go for it. Everyone makes mistakes and the trick is to know yourself, who you are and what you are good at and exploit it for all it's worth.

My history has some fairly spectacular ups and downs that include failed relationships, career suicide, drug & alcohol addiction and all manner of f**k ups and I know how easy it can be to get really down on yourself and isolate. Please resist that urge as I think that you have genuine friends who care about you here, that's why they try to give advice (that may seem like criticism!)

One last bit of advice that I have really found to be true over the the years is don't take jobs you hate because the cash is good. I know that you worry about debt but they can't take what you don't have. Find something that you enjoy and are good at. Do that and the money will come as you progress.

Take as much time as you need - the forum's not going anywhere. Even though you've had a setback in terms of trucking, you never know what's around the corner, and I do hope things work out for you.

I hope everything turns out for the best DB! Like corplhicks said, since you are single and have no kids things really are limitless. Lotsa great advice here and find something that works for you.


I just recently made a career move that I am now questioning, but I will go through with it until I can get better at it or need to move on.

I definitely think you need a "time out" DB, not just from HoM but from life in general.  Lots of good advice in this thread and I'll add one more (assuming you lose the trucking gig).  You're going to need at least some source of income while you try to figure out what to do next so I'd suggest going back to the temp job route.  I think I've told the story before but I did that for about 6 months while I went to what back then was called a "computer programming school".  Best move I ever made; yeah, I did some weird jobs but it brought in some money and allowed me to make ends meet while going to school.  As a result I've been in IT for almost 30 years and in my current job for 19 years.   You just gotta sort it out...

That's cool Toho. I've thought about doing the very same thing as a plan B in case my business folds.

Temp route is something I always suggest, or, ironically for right now, government jobs. Both don't have to meet up to your end vocational decision and you can pursue short-term schooling or something along those lines. Maybe even start your own business, which is what I did with zero experience, and is working out very well.

My  Michael: Just take a break from all music and your fantasy books and fantasy actresses and beer and whatever else really interests you ASAP cold turkey style. Clear your head of everything for a short time, I've done it myself, it's helped me tremendously in the past when everything felt like a big pressure cooker because we all go through rough episodes every once in a while. Eventually you go back bit by bit with more discernment, but you have to make a complete break from everything immediately if you're willing to have a real change in your circumstances.

A little Buddha wisdom: Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

I've always admired the way you were so open and forthright with your life on here.  To me that is a nice trait to have.  

We should probably start a thread where we all tell the soul-searching moments we've all had in our lives both professional and personal.  I always think of the joke about "how do you make God laugh?  Make a plan".  Anyway, hope you find what you're truly searching for and are able to take your various experiences as more life lessons than anything else.  Easier said than done, but try to keep positive about everything in your soul searching.
