| I think that the nineties were a great decade for extreme metal genres such as Death, Black and Doom. Many classic albums from all three genres came out in the nineties.
Plus myself I liked grunge I just never stopped listening to metal.

Tad Morose- Sender of Thoughts(95) Royal Hunt - Paradox (97) Rough Silk - Mephisto (97)
all those melodic/prog metal bands had several great albums in the 90's. There are more like Memento Mori, Threshold,Ivanhoe etc.

| Awesome thanks guys, obviously stuff like the Black Album and RIP were on my radar but there is plenty here that wasn't (the last Rage & Running Wild albums I have heard are from the 80's) should keep me going for a while! | |

- Metallica's Black album gets a lot of hate, but I think it's a masterpiece albeit some filler (I've always been of the opinion that filler happens, so why give a F*ck).
Really? Ive always heard that the Black album was one of their best. I wouldnt call it a classic yet give it a couple more years. I personally like songs from the Black album not my fav Metallica release (which is Load)

I always try to convince "metal" fans that this is an album they need to own. Stoner Witch ain't far behind it either.

| I'm not sure about "classic" (I have a 30 year rule for using that term), but here are some albums that are still in my collection (I sold the majority of my 90s CD collection years ago).
Prong - Beg To Differ Coroner - Mental Vortex Trouble - Trouble Sleep - Holy Mountain Kyuss - Blues For The Red Sun & Welcome To Sky Valley Slayer - Diabolus In Musica Voivod - Angel Rat Meshuggah - Destroy, Erase, Improve Motorhead - Sacrifice The Obsessed - The Church Within Opeth - Orchid, Morningrise, My Arms Your Hearse & Still Life Orange Goblin - Frequencies From Planet Ten & Time Traveling Blues Testament - The Gathering
Plus the usual suspects like Rust In Peace, Chaos A.D., etc. |

Technically though, you're right, they aren't a metal band. _________________

To me, the Melvins fall into that rare breed of band that is impossible to categorize, and yet despite that, their whole discography makes a weird kind of sense. IMO they're like a genre all onto themselves.

| I'm more of an '80s lady, BUT there are some metal albums from the 1990s I really like (mostly early '90s). Here are the main ones that come to mind:
Testament--Souls Of Black (1990) Saxon--Solid Ball Of Rock (1990) Danzig II--Lucifuge (1990) Death Angel--Act III (1990) Exodus--Impact Is Imminent (1990) Annihilator--Never, Neverland (1990) Metal Church--The Human Factor (1991) Running Wild--Pile Of Skulls (1992) Black Sabbath--Dehumanizer (1992) Rage--Trapped! (1992) Running Wild--Black Hand Inn (1994)
