Legendary folk singer Richie Havens passed away today at the age of 72 from a heart attack. Richie was the opening act of the Woodstock festival and his performance is one of those iconic moments from that era. In addition to his own material he did many excellent covers over the years...
I became a fan of Richie Havens because of his albums of Bob Dylan covers, the man sang with so much heart and soul. I was born in 1970, so not really part of the hippie generation that he sang about, but his music touched me anyway.
I'll never forget seeing Freedom for the first time when I was just a kid. It went on and on and on and on but I was so mesmerized and caught up in it all. Richie had an amazing spirit, RIP.
First time I ever saw the film Woodstock I was not terribly impressed with most of the performances. Richie Havens, on the other hand, blew me away. Made me an instant fan. IMO he stole the show.
The Dreaming As One A&M comp has been a long time want. Just may have to bite the bullet now.
