I was and am a major fan of their music, especially their early 80's releases, was a big fan of this gal. I was sad to hear of her passing:

She had been battling breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.
Divinyls singer Chrissy Amplett performs on Dec. 22, 2007, in Perth, Australia

She was the lead singer of the Australian rock band Divinyls, whose hit I Touch Myself brought her and the group international fame in the early 1990s.

Chrissy Amphlett has died at her home in New York City, reports AP. She was 53.

Her musician husband, Charley Drayton, said in a statement that "Amphlett succumbed to the effects of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis" on Sunday.

Amphlett formed the Divinyls in 1980 with musician Mark McEntee and Jeremy Paul.

The band released six albums between 1982 and 1996, peaking in 1991 with I Touch Myself, which reached No. 1 in Australia, No. 4 in the United States and No. 10 in Britain.

In 2007, Amphlett revealed to fans that she had multiple sclerosis. In 2010 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She remained positive throughout her illnesses and vowed to return to the stage in a post left on Facebook in March last year, reports World News Australia.

"My illnesses have really exhausted this little body of mine that I have thrown from one end of the stage to another and performed thousands of shows that sadly some of you missed," she wrote. "With that said I am getting stronger but there is still some fine tuning and work to be done on myself."

Among those remembering Amphlett is Russell Crowe, who tweeted: "Dear Chrissie, The last time I saw you was in the Botanic Gardens, loving life and reciting verse. That's how I'll remember you, your boy, R."

Can't say I knew her outside of that one hit, but I was still shocked to hear the news this morning. I had no idea she was in such bad shape. Rest in peace.

That's a bummer. Like MG sez, I only knew their one hit, but WHAT a hit. That video for "I Touch Myself" still turns up on VH1 Classic on a pretty regular basis... and every time it came on I would wonder, "Dang. She was purdy. Whatever happened to her?"

Criminally underrated band. And in some ways her looks probably overshadowed what are some killer albums. I would rank them up there with Blondie. And on some days even better.

This is my favorite song of theirs. Sadly appropriate for the occasion. RIP.

The Divinyls were legendary within the Australian pub scene and had a number of hits down here in addition to their US breakthrough hit. As jstate said, an underrated band and performer. RIP, Chrissy.

What style of music would you say they were? The clip that jstate posted sounded like New Wave or something I guesss. Is that an accurate description?

I'd classify them as alternative pop/rock with a strong new wave influence. Their earlier stuff could definitely fall into the new wave school.

Drives me crazy to see them referred to as a one-hit wonder here in the US. Glad they were big in their homeland.

They actually had a couple of minor MTV hits back in the early 80's, 'Pleasure and Pain" and one other tune that I can't remember.

In the early 80's they were classified as a new wave band and later on as an alternative rock band. Either way, they had some great songs and singles, and in their native homeland they were legendary.

I vaugely remember right after 'I Touch Myself' hit big, they followed it up with another single from the same album but it didn't catch on. Lightning only stuck once for them here in the States.

Anyone else recall what that song might have been?

I believe it was "Make Out Alright"?

or could've been "Love School"

Such a shame either weren't hits. They should've been.

Am always on the lookout for the Desperate and Underworld albums. Those suckers are hard to find and go for crazy prices.

I have both, 'Desperate' on vinyl and 'Underground' on CD

'Love School' was the second single in the States
