Britain's significance in metal

I think part of the reason for the decline in British metal is the direction music took in the 90s. In America you had grunge while in the UK it was Britpop that became the prevaling style. Britpop not being that heavy meant that the heavy music scene dwindled and the impetus for new metal bands wasn't there.
