PostSubject: 2013 Oscar Nominations   2013 Oscar Nominations Icon_minitimeThu Jan 10, 2013 12:44 pm

Announced today. Once again, I haven't seen a single film that was nominated. That's gotta be at least the 20th year in a row... Very Happy

But seriously, there are some nominees that I'd like to see ("Argo," "Skyfall," "Zero Dark Thirty," and "Wreck It Ralph") but I haven't gotten around to 'em yet.

Surprisingly, it appears that "The Dark Knight Rises" didn't get nominated for anything at all, despite all the "Best Picture" talk it got when it first opened (It didn't even get a nod in the technical/effects categories, which is where superhero flicks usually clean up)... betcha all the Nolanite fanboys are sh*tting a solid gold brick about that. "OMG HE WUZ ROBBED!!11!!"

Looks like there's only 2 that I've seen in those listings ('Wreck-It Ralph' and 'Moonrise Kingdom') however for once there are actually a bunch of them that I want to see. Just haven't got around to it yet.

Not surprisingly there were some serious snubs of independent films yet again this year, 2012 was a year where 90% of the best films I saw were indies.

A few glaring omissions:

Best Original Screenplay - Safety Not Guaranteed, Ruby Sparks and Liberal Arts.

Best Adapted Screenplay - The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

Best Actress - Mary Elizabeth Winstead for her transcendent performance in Smashed, Elizabeth Banks in People Like Us

Best Actor - Anthony Hopkins in Hitchcock

Best Supporting Actress - Helen Mirren in Hitchcock, Emily Blunt in Looper

Best Director - Ben Affleck for Argo. When the director doesn't get a nomination it's a good indication the film has no chance to take Best Picture.

Lincoln will most likely take most of the major awards, it's a Spielberg film and a historical drama...which is essentially crack to Academy voters.

In all fairness, 'Lincoln' was a brilliant film and Daniel Day Lewis makes Lincoln a real person instead of walking civics lesson.

I definitely plan to watch it and I'm sure it's great. I just feel the Academy leans too heavily toward big-budget "prestige pictures" most of the time.

Of course last year "The Artist" won and that was a ballsier move than usual for them.

The lingering specters of "Gigli" and "Daredevil" still hang around his neck like a pair of bloody albatrosses.

How can Tarantino get nominated for best original screenplay when all he does is re-ensct all his favorite movies, sometimes almost scene for scene?

Oh, this is the second nomination for a Norwegian movie about Kon-Tiki is nominated. The last time the documentary about Kon-Tiki, made by Tor Heyerdahl himself, won. I hope this movie about the explorer wins also!

His screenplays are loved by other screenwriters, particularly his dialogue.

The way the Academy works is that screenwriters select the best screenplay nominees, directors choose directors, actors choose actors, etc. Then the entire Academy votes for the Best Picture winners.

Best screenplay, I would understand. It's the word "original" that irks me. Because borrowing from others ain't doin' something original.

Very few film makers are doing anything original these days, and the ones that are, ain't getting nominated for Oscars. I lost all faith in the Oscars when Milk got the nod ahead of The Wrestler a few years back.

I really do want to see Lincoln though!

Personally, I hope that Silver Linings Playbook takes the Best Picture nod this year. I also think Jennifer Lawrence most definitely deserves to take Best Actress as well.

A beautiful film; funny, emotional and honest.

The Oscars are tonight (Sunday 24th). Looking forward to the show this year because the predictions are all over the map, might actually be some surprises.

There is a salute to James Bond which will get all the stars together (Connery, Moore, Dalton, Lazenby, Brosnan & Craig) on the same stage.

Plus the host is Seth McFarlane which should be interesting.

I'll be rooting for Argo & Silver Linings Playbook to take home some awards.

Witness Maggie's epic battle to save a butterfly from "Gerald," the evil baby with one eyebrow!

I always watch the Oscars (either live or taped for later), I don't think I've missed a single one in the last 30 years.

Best Director - Ang Lee (Life Of Pi)
Original Screenplay - Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained)

This didn't happen, it had been reported (well, leaked actually) awhile back but was never confirmed by the Academy that it was going to happen. It was nice having Shirley Bassey come onstage and sing Goldfinger (she still sounds great) and the other Bond moment was Adele singing the theme song to Skyfall and then winning the Best Original Song award.

Kinda bummed that the "All Bond Actors on the same stage" thing didn't happen. That would've been uber-sweet.

...and apparently Maggie Simpson got skunked in the animated short category. Oh well.
