So me and the lady went to see Battleship this past weekend, and in the movie was a ZZ Top song I'd never heard before. It was a mix of ZZ Top with some urban flair, which seemed odd at first. But I dug it.
I guess the song is a cover of this horrible song by DJ DMD. What a bizarre song for ZZ Top to cover. Haha. Here is a bit of their version (I can't find the full song):
Since it's a commercial, I guess some of you may have seen that before. Pretty cool tune, though, especially considering the original is so bad.
Anyway, while looking on YouTube I can across this:
Guess that's a new song from their upcoming album. It's been online for almost a year, but I don't think I saw it ever posted anywhere. Really good tune. Love the chorus. Reminds me a bit of "She's A Heartbreaker."
If this is a sign of what their new album will sound like, I'm down.

Rick Rubin has been the cause of the delay in releasing the new album (he's probably too busy snorting coke to mix).
That doesn't really say much, though. What's Rubin waiting for?

I guess it takes him a while to destroy a mix like he did with Death Magnetic.

Weird combo. Not a Gretchen Wilson fan, but I love ZZ Top and 3 Doors Down, so I'd go see that.

What I've heard of Gretchen Wilson is more like Southern Rock than country IMO. She's from just across the Illinois border here so she gets a lot of play round these parts.
The odd man out in that combo to me is 3 Doors Down.

This particular show doesn't interest me, but I dig shows with very diverse bands playing together...much more interesting than seeing 6 bands that all play identical styles.
That's why stuff like Kool & The Gang opening for Van Halen didn't bother me, I thought it was a great party combo.

That Gretchen gal can belt it out....remember her doing those Heart tunes on VH1 ? I was impressesd. Diverse blls can be fun or boring, just like any other concert billings.

man, I've been listening to all of the 70's ZZ Top on vinyl lately. I never knew until recently that all those years hearing them on the radio and CD, I was hearing crappy remixes. Apparently (and I'm the last to have learned this) the original vinyl releases are the true original mixes, and they pulled a fast one on us. Nevertheless, these albums are awesome, the guitars are intense and rather heavy. I know all the hits but alot of these I've never heard before and my respect and admiration for ZZ Top is through-the-roof right now.
Every one of their 70's albums is great and most are vastly overlooked.

Precious & Grace from Tres Hombres is heavy as hell, one of my favorite ZZ Top songs, killer riff.

If ya read thier biography, Billy has kinda been "in it for the money" for quite some time [before DeGuello, even!] Who can blame him though? One of the true great US guitar-benders of our lifetime! I went to Frank's mansion in Houston a bunch of years ago and the guards turned me away simply because he was actually home at the time. They said we could come back and hang on the grounds if he was not home. I think that is hip. But at the same time, WTF? Right? Anyways. The Reverend Billy F Gibbons is still one of the greatest lyrical minds of the last 40 years! And, if it matters, Jimi Hendrix fav guitarist, too!

In case anyone missed my post in the new-releases thread, ZZ Top put out a new digital-only EP last month called Texicali. It's pretty damn good!
