This is my Q&D review of the Mastodon/Opeth/Ghost concert from OKC, OK on 4-18-12.
(I went to a mosh pit and a Mastodon concert broke out, lol)
First off let me say I'm a new convert to Opeth in the past year and a half but have grown to be a big fan and was really looking forward to this show!
Opening and playing for about 35 minutes was Ghost. I'd posted on the board and got some links to youtube videos of some of their stuff, but really had no expectations..
I'm not a big fan of the over the top satanic stuff however musically it was a pleasant surprise. They sounded clean and the theatrical show was pretty cool. They were entertaining!
Next was Opeth.
I'd read somewhere that about half their set was from Heritage, but I think it was closer to 2/3's. I like the Heritage album musically but kinda prefer the heavier stuff. M.A. was entertaining and I found out that he plays angry birds and has a tiny shrimp shaped penis. (personally I didn't need to know that, but hey, it's his show!)
You could tell he was comfortable with the audience and looked like he was having a good time.
They saved the heavy stuff for last and M.A. actually said “thanks for being patient” as they played their Heritage set, which I found odd. As if they knew people weren't as crazy about it as they are the “black metal” (his words). They finished with “The Grand Conjuration” which was nice to go out with.
Finally Mastodon. (Yes, that cooler says "performance sauce")
Honestly I had little expectation except I'd heard they tore it up live.
That's a huge phucking understatement. There was no B.S., no chit chat, no breaks and no time to catch your breath. It was a full hour and fifteen of full on assault. The energy level was over the top and after they were done playing I felt like I'd been kicked in the head and had a kidney taken from me.
Absolutely amazing and the most fun I'd had at a show in a long time.
Was talking to my buddy on the way home and we both agreed all the acts were a nice contrast and overall worth every penny. If they're coming to your town buy a ticket and make your ears bleed! You won't regret it!
