Larry Coryell, any of his late 60's/early 70's albums he recorded for Vanguard. There is a good single disc compilation of this era called "Vanguard Visionaries" that should be easy to locate. It should also be on Spotify.

I would also check out Tony Williams' Lifetime, early Weather Report, Cannonball Adderley's late 60's/early 70's albums, Miles Davis' Live Evil, Herbie Hancock's early 70's albums...many, many others.

It's definitely my favorite Savatage album; the first song I heard from them was "Damien", so I tend to prefer Zak Stevens to Jon Oliva.

It's definitely more accessible than B*tches Brew, and I love John McLaughlin's guitar playing.

Bitches Brew is great when you're in the right mood for it. I recommended the album "Live Evil" by Miles because John McLaughlin is on there as well.

Alot of Miles sixties work is very accesible, I would recommend trying albums like E.S.P., Miles Smiles, In A Silent Way and Miles In The Sky.

Zak is my favorite vocalist so I'm with you. The first Savatage song I heard was "Edge Of Thorns". It is my fav Savatage album as well. I can re-play the entire album in my head note for note, lyrics for lyrics. Sadly it was the last album to ever feature IMO, the best metal guitarist ever!
