Pretty cool story from LA Weekly. Once when I had time to kill I actually wandered around those places. Pretty different today.

The Doors seem to one of those bands people either really love or really hate, hardly any in-betweeners. Worst band ever? I think Motorhead took that prize once too.

The album L.A. Woman is my favorite by The Doors, there is so much attitude on that record and the songs are great.

The Doors are my favorite band of all time, and its not for everyone, but those a$$hole critics who think Vampire Weekend are the greatest band of all time, or not only elite sh!theads but possibly deaf.

The Hold Steady aren't even worthy to mention in the same breathe as Jim Morrison, that sh!tty band The Hold Steady may have critics eating out of their hands, but have as of yet, ten years into their career they may have not managed to create one song, that is not even as good as the Doors worst song.

I've never read a single word from Lester Bangs after learning of his intense hatred for Black Sabbath. Not even sure what music that guy liked?

Morrison Hotel is my favorite for a variety of reasons. But I love them all and they all get frequent plays. Personally I think The Doors get under-rated musically just because the whole Morrison icon thing.

I was actually a late comer to them. I knew the hits but it wasn't until Oliver Stone's movie came out that I became a fan. All the music mags were doing stories so it intrigued me enough to borrow a friend's copy of Morrison Hotel. Still have never even seen that movie.

I saw the movie in theatres when it came out, it was pretty cool considering that at the time I knew less than diddly squat about the Doors. Haven't seen it since then other than a few bits & pieces if I channel surf past VH1 Classic while it's on though.

Now that I think about it, I have it on DVD, though... bought it at least three or four years ago but I've never gotten around to watching it. Last I looked it was sitting on the shelf, still in the shrink wrap.

Picked up the L.A. Weekly with this article, very cool read. There is a section on each song from the album with reminisces by the band members and the producer, it's interesting to hear how L.A. inspired the songwriting. Whether it's Jim leaving L.A. (The Changeling) or the city itself (L.A. Woman) or the "Venice Beach Noir" story (Cars Hiss By The Window).

Jim Morrison was so excited to be doing this album, he told anyone who cared to listen, that at last he was creating a blues album, too bad he passed away shortly after its release.

L.A. Woman is such an interesting album in their discography, the organic way the album was produced (recorded live, no more than 3 takes on any given track, written in the studio by the band) ended up being just the "mojo" they needed to create a masterpiece.

They stripped away all the artifice, jettisoned the psychedelia and just focused on writing the music that came to them most naturally. Probably the best Doors album, but also a record that stands on it's own in their discography. I have friends that usually dislike the Doors but love the L.A. Woman album.

Simplicity is a beautiful thing.

I have to agree, and during the recording of this album, Morrison did not blow the sessions by showing up blotto and really loved recording his vocals with the band in the same room playing.
