| I just joined my school's choir. I'm in the lowest tier of 3 groups, but still, I feel accomplished to have gotten in, and the instructor says she sees promise in me. All in all, I'm feeling good, but now I need to refresh myself on a bit of music theory and such, plus I want to learn to sight-sing so I can get into varsity choir. It's a long process, but being in choir just feels right to me.
Anyway, were any of you in choir/band/orchestra throughout your school years? Did you like it? Tell us stories, ye brave men.

| Congratulations.
I was in band all though out middle school and 3 years of high school. In my Senior year I joined the Concert Choir, where I played drums and sang. I had never sang before, but my choir director apparently saw something in me and asked me to join the "show choir", after someone had left. After spending only one year in choir I was mad that I wasted my time with band. Choir was such a rewarding experience.
Good luck to you and have fun.

| I was in choir and band from 5th grade on through graduation. My junior and senior years I received a rating of 1+ at district and state contest for our vocal quartet. | |

Good luck to you and have fun. That sounds like a very rewarding experience! I'm in a similar situation; I was in band for 4 years or so, and then I took a break. In the two years between then and now, I gained an even greater affinity for singing than I had before, and so this year I took choir! So far, it's a blast and I love it. - bassman wrote:

Nice job, man! What instrument did you play in band? That sounds like a very high honor, also.

| This does my heart good! I am a high school choir director and I love hearing people say how much they enjoyed their high school music experiences.
For the record, I was a band geek in high school, played saxophone since fifth grade. I was inspired to major in music education by my high school band director and studied sax as my major instrument in college. I sang in the choir at college; made it into the select group as a sophomore. After graduating, I was a band director for a couple of years, went back to school to begin my Master's and took a job as a choir director. I found out I enjoyed it and have never looked back!
PLEASE do what you can to support your local school music (and arts) programs. They are being cut all over the country as cost-saving measures and it is a travesty. Music is one of the things that makes school an enjoyable place. I have had several students over the years who would have dropped out if it weren't for the music programs. Don't let music disappear from your local district!

Ah, very nice! I played trumpet for one year, then switched to french horn for the next 3 I was in band for. I must say, the breathing techniques have helped me in so many ways (I can run far better and that helped me lose weight and gain a better appearance, sing louder/stronger, etc.), it's probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. I tried playing bass, and guitar too at various points, but strings just don't agree with me. - QuothTheRaven wrote:

Don't let music disappear from your local district! Though my school is ridiculously sports-oriented (aside from being rich white kids (I'm not rich, but I make up for that with excessive whiteness), that's what we're known for), we do have good music programs, and they sustain themselves with a few really good fundraisers per year. I've always tried to support it even when I wasn't in it, and I'm going to do even more now that I am.
