Hetfield doing Stone Cold Crazy with Queen and Tony Iommi was a highlight...

  • Brian May with Spike Edney - Too Much Love Will Kill You
  • Queen + Paul Young - Radio Ga Ga
  • Queen + Seal - Who Wants to Live Forever
  • Queen + Lisa Stansfield - I Want to Break Free
  • Queen + David Bowie/Annie Lennox - Under Pressure
  • Queen + Ian Hunter/David Bowie/Mick Ronson/Joe Elliot/Phil Collen - All The Young Dudes

Def Leppard was there, right? Wasn't that the first time they ever played live with Vivian Campbell? I remember hating it. They played "Let's Get Rocked" first, and I couldn't stand Vivian's back-up vocals. He's better now, he knows how to harmonize with the guys better, but that performance saddened me. They did a great version of "Tie Your Mother Down," though.

Gary Cherone and Extreme did some good stuff, too.

I remember watching this show when it aired on MTV... some very cool stuff. They did eventually release some of the "highlights" from the concert as a VHS video but I didn't buy it because I was annoyed that Spinal Tap's appearance wasn't on the tape. Smile

The Ian Hunter/Mick Ronson/David Bowie/Def Leppard/Queen collaboration of All The Young Dudes was probably the greatest moment of that concert. But sadly the best performance was left off of the DVD, I'm talking about Extreme's Queen Medley that went for about 15 minutes. It will knock your socks off, its unbelievable. Gary Cherone sings his ass off and Nuno Bettencourt shreds right the way through it plus the vocal interaction between Gary, Nuno and Pat during Fat Bottomed Girls is insane!

Elton & Axl doing 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was exquisite. Still rocks my socks every time I hear it...

actually David Bowie and Annie Lennox singing 'Under Pressure' was really awesome as well.

Freddie was such an awesome vocalist. Saw a documentary on him a few months back, was really cool but it made me sad too.

Finally, someone besides me who remembers Extreme's Queen Medley! I was blown away!!! When I got the DVD I spent days looking for hidden features hoping that would be on there! I was not an Extreme fan until that day!!!

That was one of those great days in music history where artists get together for a great cause. I remember watching the concert in it's entirety. I wasn't able to watch the whole Live Aid thing in 1985 when it happened, because we didn't have cable at the time. I remember seeing some of it over at a friends house, but it was a long event. The Freddy Mercury tribute was the closest thing to the Live Aid event in 1985.

I wonder why they never released the entire show, I remember buying the DVD and was annoyed that it was missing Def Leppard, Mick Ronson and Extreme set, yet they throw in rehearsal footage, still a good DVD but they could have made it into a great DVD.

Still it was a great tribute to Freddie Mercury.

Well, I can't tell you why there is stuff missing from this concert, but it's pretty sad regarding the reasons why there is stuff missing from Live Aid in 1985. Supposedly whomever's responsibility it was to come up with the footage from the Live Aid show had to literally rummage through boxes (I think many were unmarked) to find the footage that they currently have. I guess it was such a mess, and so unorganized, that those who distributed it felt like they had enough. They basically got what they could from the tapes, edited out the commercials, and we have the best version that we'll ever see. There are so many glaring omissions from what was a gigantic setlist, it's unbelievable. MTV should be absolutely ashamed of itself. It was deemed to be such a ground breaking concert for humanity, and then this was how it was treated.

...I often get this visual that the basement of MTV looks like something out of Raiders of the Lost Ark at the end, when they sandwich in the Ark of the Covenant with the million other crates.

Im not surprised, Axl idolized Elton John in the book Get In The Ring by Mick Wall it mentions that Axl idolized musicians like Elton John and Billy Joel

Has this show ever been released on DVD? That would be killer
