My take is to try out everything before I can make up my mind.
On a general note, I like metal. I've never restricted myself to one or two genres because that's not what I'm about. I like the way metal sounds in all the varied and diverse styles it has to offer.
What matters to me is how the band sounds and whether they can deliver a well rounded consistent album of songs that will make me react in some way - whether it's something that moves me physically, getting me to headbang or airguitar or airdrum, or something that is more thought provoking and emotional.
I'm that way too but with that band name and that logo, I pretty much already know what I'm in for.
"Woooooooooaaaaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh!"
But that's my own personal bias; to me there's no difference between death metal and "melodic" death metal; once I hear Cookie Monster, I'm done.
I guess I'll leave your threads alone Alex. I knew before you and I have very different musical tastes and I don't want to derail your threads with my opinions.

I think what made me like death metal in the beginning was my fondness for thrash. At the time I was getting into metal one of my earliest bands was Sepultura. A friend had lent me his copy of Arise, which for is a borderline thrash / death album. I do not like going deep into technicalities and that's something I don't like generally about metalheads who bicker on styles - but the bottom line is the vocals were far harsher and deeper, growling if you like than in other bands I knew of at the time.
It was from there that I started looking more into death metal. I think Morbid Angel and Obituary peaked my interest in the genre, along with Malevolent Creation and Cannibal Corpse. All those bands' earlier releases were heavily influenced by 80s thrash but at the same time were much faster, heavier - or as the term goes: brutal - sounding than their 80s thrash predecessors.
Although I find death metal is mostly pronounced due to the guttural vocals, there is a wide variety of styles within the subgenre. The emphasis, strangely enough is not so much on the vocals but more on how proficient the band is at their instruments - drummers tend to be the most prolific members in death metal bands more so than the vocalists or the guitarists. That's not to say that there aren't any guitarists or bass player that are well known in the subgenre but there just aren't as many as in other styles of metal.
Generally speaking, the more un-readable the bands logo is the better the chances I'll like the music. I know that sounds crazy, but in my experience, the talent of the death metal band is directly proportional to how screwed up and illegible their logo is.

If you like catchy death metal similar to say Morbid Angel or Malevolent Creation:
I hadn't heard this band before now but I was under the impression they were more of a technical death type band.

They sort of are - except I think they are more listenable than most other technical death metal bands.
I normally cannot get into stuff that is too technical - just does nothing for me but this band seems to focus on more writing good catchy songs than just showing off their skills.
