Subject: Avant-garde metal? Wed Feb 02, 2011 7:29 pm
I havent been on the site in well over a year so i might as well start a thread! While I was away from the forum i sort of developed a taste for avant-garde metal. Once i found Sigh I knew i found my favorite band! groovy riffs, still with their heaviness and those amazing vocals!
It may not be for everyone but I honestly love it. so while were at it,why not an avant-garde general thread?

ive heard pretty good things about sigh but hadnt heard them until now. i generally prefer more extremity in my avant garde metal, ala deathspell omega, but i liked what i heard; ill have to get some. kekals midcareer albums (the painful experience, 1,000 thoughts of violence) are another example of great avant garde extreme metal.

Man - that was even worse than death metal. Crappy riff-offs with cookie monster vox? Kill me now.

That's 5 minutes of my life I will never get back, it should have been less but I kept listening hoping it would get better. I was wrong, I usually like stuff that's a little out of the norm but I don't like that at all.

avant-garde metal ? Is like having Velvet Underground and Nico doing Slayer and Cannibal Corpse covers.

I'd probably go with something like SPASTIC INK for arty metal.

An occasional spin through VoiVod's NOTHINGFACE is about as 'avant-garde' as I get...

this isn't avant-garde...it's "casserole metal", throw too many ingredients that don't belong together into a big baking dish and cook till burnt beyond recognition.
Believe me, I'd love to hear a band that's not afraid to mix in the improvisational direction of outside-leaning jazz with Metal...but this band definitely isn't them.

Casserole Metal.... great, another sub-genre for me not to care about.

I stole that term from myself, that's what I used to call my compilation cassettes I would make for my friends back in the 80's..."Heavy Metal Casserole Vol. 1", etc. Not as catchy as Metal Massacre, but it served my twisted purposes.

I used to title all my comp tapes "Cool Sh*t by (name of band)" or "Cool Sh*t for (name of friend I was making the tape for)"

Well, it's infinitely better than calling it " Mix Tape # 3 ". Anytime you can mix your metal with a reference to food I'm in favor of it.

Mine used to be "A Whole Lotta _____" (METAL, band name, etc.). I took that from AC/DC in a roundabout sorta way. I have a bootleg of GnR playing 'Whole Lotta Rosie' and in Axl's pre-song chatter, he states, "I ain't no Bon Scott, but that's a Whole Lotta Rosie to me..." We sorta adopted the phrase amongst ourselves after that. A Motorhead comp would be "A Whole Lotta Lemmy" for example. Or if someone was trying to bamboozle you, we'd say "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Now I ain't no Bon Scott, but that souns like a Whole Lotta Bullsh*t to me".
Yea, we didn't have many chicks hanging around us back then. Which is probably why I feel so at home here.

Sigh are awesome. Way,way too many tradtionalists around here. It's all ways about the vocalists, too. Why do you care about vocalists any ways? I don't care about the stupid lyrics, either. People who are so hung up on vocals, why don't you just read some pretty poetry and stay out of the metal scene? Let's face it none of us are getting any younger, a lot of people around here wish it was 1985 forever. Guess what it's 2011. "Cookie Monster " vocals aren't going anywhere. That cats been let out of the bag. To me metal has allways been about heavy, interesting riffs, not the vocals exspecially in this post-Dio era. I want to hear new intersting ideas in the metal I listen to now, not some corny-retro power metal, or ironic glam/sleaze shiite. Everybody can listen to what ever they want, but there are some real stick in the mud traditionalists here that can't tolerate new ideas in their music. When someone says "I can't stand the vocals" I just picture some balding 40 something sticking his fingers in his ears, looking desperatly for his signed Pretty Maids album to calm him down. Hail Sigh,Yakusa,Vektor,Melt Banana and other unique music.

Unlike your posts, I like my vocalists to be understandable and I want the music to bring me pleasure.

I don't mind harsh vocals as long as they're done well and fit the music. Just because something is new or original doesn't make it good. Bands should experiment and add different influences to their sound, but when it's all done, it still needs to sound decent. Not like a garbage truck crashing into an animal shelter, which is what Sigh sounds like to me.
