Where I live in Florida nobody called it hair metal we called it pop metal, except for local hipster who hated pop metal called it poodle metal

No. That term came about in the 90s as a way to make fun of all the bands of the MTV/Platinum sales era. We used to call it "Commercial Metal" or "Pop Metal" back in its heyday to differentiate it from Thrash Metal or Heavy Metal. "Pop Metal" was the Hard Rock that got power ballads on the radio and was played on Headbanger's Ball in between Megadeth and Iron Maiden videos.

Where I grew up in South Florida, everyone used to call it "Bubble Gum Rock"

You can thank someone like K-Tel for the term Hair Metal.

I hate it, now it seems like a radio station can't play a 80's rock song anymore unless
the're having some kind of 80s or hair metal themed show at the time.

It's ok to play Def Leppard, Crue, or Poison at anytime, but the others have to be for a special show.

Stryper was heavier than a lot of those other bands but in terms of the image and the marketing they fit right in, particularly when you start talking about the ballads
