First band that popped into my head when I saw this thread was Steelheart, but that's probably because I've been listening to their debut over the least few days.

To be honest, Twisted Sister usually comes to mind right away too, but mostly due to Dee's old radio show "Hair Metal Nation". Twisted Sister morphed into a pop metal band, but early on were just a straight up heavy metal band. Ruff Cuts, Under the Blade & You Can't Stop Rock and Roll are about as heavy as you can get in 1981, 82, 83.

You are right we used to call it pop metal btw I never considered Dokken a hair/pop metal band.

I never called any bands "hair metal" in the 80's or early 90's. It was pop metal, glam metal, heavy metal, thrash metal, speed metal, etc.

Anyone remember the term "butt rock" that was thrown around a lot when heavy metal was dirty word in teh 1990's?

Plus you could always put on Alone Again for a little couch action with that uptight chick you convinced not to wear a bra.

Dokken was definately "pop metal".

I think Lynch made them a little more respectable.

I can see your and TZ's point, when I think of hair metal I think of bands such as Poison, Trixter, and bands that had very little musical substance. I felt Dokken musically had a lot more to offer then alot of the bands labeled as such back in the day.

Dokken was definitely a step above the average hair metal band. Poison started out as a cliche but by Flesh & Blood I think they had matured enough musically and lyrically to be a worthy listen.

yeah. Dokken was better and should have been included less, but, like, at the same time, Dokken sucks. You know?
