Kerrang! did describe the Melissa album as black metal when it was released in 1983. I also seem to remember Celtic Frost being described as death metal around the time of the Morbid Tales album the following year. Interesting that both terms would come to describe completely different styles several years later.

Yep, seems just like yesterday when black metal was about if it was a heavy metal band and singing about satan. Though, that wasn't the first description of Mercyful Fate to me when "Melissa" was out. A friend told me "Mercyful Fate? they sound like Judas Priest...but better than them!"

I think I need to fatten up my Mercyful Fate discography. Right now I only have Melissa and Don't Break the Oath.
Any suggestions where I should go next?

I recently got outbid on that one. Better luck next time I guess. I thought I saw a copy not long ago in the used section at the local FYE. I'll take a peek next time I'm at the mall, although it's probably gone by now.

In The Shadows should be the next one you grab, I think it's better than Time.

That's the next one chronologically, right?
Thankfully the MF catalog isn't too deep or very expensive. From what I've seen, most of 'em go for under $10 with shipping, so it won't break the bank for me.
I'm in no hurry, but I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for more albums. Thanks, fellas.

Yes, it's the reunion album from 1993.

I am surprised at how King Diamond wrote so many of these songs - by himself - If he and his bands were around in the 1970's - forget it - Anybody know if he's a millionare ?

Probably Abigail with Fatal Portrait being really close. I'd probably have an easier time picking my least favorite as opposed to my favorite since I like just about all of them.

HAHAHA! I'm sure he's far from it. We're talking about Heavy Metal in 2015. I'm sure he's pretty well off but millionaire? no.

The complexity of some of these songs do amaze me - I cant fathom young aspiring guitar players - young bands - actually learning some of these songs - challenging, to say the least - King MUST have been influenced by Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult - Alice Cooper did have 'Nightmare' and 'Go To Hell' out and about - makes ya wonder -

Always liked MF alot better than his solo stuff. My favorite would be Fatal Portrait. Though, The Eye has always been one of my favorites and there's good moments on the albums in between.

Some woman tells the story of the album. Not how the album was recorded and produced - but the story within all the songs. Very similar to say Ann Rice.

Usually I can’t stand a live album with blatant vocal overdubs. I don’t mind this double cd concert DEADLY LULLABYES. Good price. Horrible album photo. Fun fast listen !
