To be fair - none.

I saw them live. I went to see Goatwhore - and they were there. I just was not at all impressed with their live show. Very boring. Goatwhore blew them out of the water that night.

It could've been a bad night for them.

But you know how it goes ... when you have a not so good experience with a band live ... you don't really want to buy any of their albums. So I have refrained from doing so.

In talking the origins of br000000tal/tech stuff, I would take Suffocation over say, Cryptopsy, if that means anything.

When I am talking origins - I'd take Obituary, Pestilence and Death.

That's where I'm at with my death metal.

As far as newer bands go - Goatwhore is one of the best! But they also mix black metal in. So they are like a blackened death.

If you like death n roll, Helltrain is very good!!!

Yeah but I was referring to where all the tech-brutal stuff of today came from, not old-school DM in general. I prefer old school too.

I guess I'm not into the tech stuff as much.

I do like Fear Factory though ... but they're a different animal altogether I guess.

Along with what everyone has mentioned, you can't go wrong (IMO) by starting with Florida Death Metal (Obituary, Monstrocity, Malevolent Creation, Cannibal Corpse, Brutality, Divine Empire, Morbid Angel, etc) and other early bands of the genre (Bolt Thrower, Cancer, Benediction, Napalm Death --I would include them--etc).
There are many death metal bands with a variety of influences that make them a little different (Opeth, Daath, etc).
For plain ol' BRUTAL death metal I suggest:
Dying Fetus, Hour of Penance, Unmerciful, Withered Earth, Dehumanized, Vile, Deeds of Flesh, Decrepit Birth, Inveracity, etc

another one of my favorites is Scar Symmetry. But they are very melodic death metal.

When it comes to death metal, I tend to like the more 'melodic or trad' stuff. Not really into the tech, grind or prog stuff.

I've been checking out Nirvana 2002, cool Swedish stuff from the old school..vocals are for fans of Roger Martinez..

I like so many death metal bands, but here's my top 10 list:

1. Morbid Angel - can't get past this classic almost the alpha and omega of death metal for me anyways

1. Amon Amarth

Sorry I must have these two on the same spot hahah both rule!

2. Bloodbath - sure this band kinda pays tribute to the old school death metal sound but they nevertheless sound like they could have easily belonged to both the Florida and the Swedish death metal scene of the early 90s.

3. Death - name says it all. Chuck Schuldiner was a genius!

4. Carcass - some may lump them in the grindcore category, not sure where they belong but to me they merged a number of different styles of extreme metal from grind to melodic death metal it seems they covered it all in the decade or so their activity. I caught them live about 2 years ago , the show was gruesome but awesome all the same.

5. Edge of Sanity - Dan Swano is like Schuldiner's long lost brother. It sometimes amazes me how the two never an album together ...

6. Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum and Testimony of the Ancients is where it's at with these guys.

7. Psycroptic - these guys hail from my country , Australia. Very brutal , very technical and generally psychotic sounding death metal.

8. UNLEASHED!!!

9. Nile - caught them live several years ago , and also got to me Karl Sanders awesome dude and very friendly.

10. Destroyer 666 - another Australian classic.

As far as Pestilence goes, I kinda prefer "Consuming Impulse" myself. Have you not heard that one? Just incredible in many different ways.

Nice to see someone else singing Amon Amarth's praise. Seems like the popular thing nowadays is 'not' to like them. Whatever. This band SLAYS!!! And since you have them in number 1 (where they belong by all means), you get a cyber brew from me mate!

Amon Amarth is not bad, but most definitely 'melodeath', which shouldn't count. I don't think people didn't list them because they dislike them. It would be awesome if they turned full on death though since Hegg's vocals are brutal.

Why shouldn't melo-death count? I didn't see where the creator of this thread asked for just one kind of death metal.

But I am including melo-death, as if I didn't - I wouldn't have as many favorites in this genre. This genre is actually pretty hit or miss for me. Same with black metal.

Power metal, classic metal and some glam and thrash metal are mostly what I can't turn down. I love the majority of music in those genres.

Same with synthpop (but that's for the other forum) ...
