Top ten death metal bands.

Would someone be kind enough to list what you would consider the top 10 death metal bands. I have recently just started listening to more of the extreme type metal a lot more than before. Bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, Suffocation, Nile and Obscura to name a few. I would like to broaden my metal horizons so to speak.

What is the difference say between grind and death?

progressive/imaginative and old-school is my bag...very little use for super gore, or uber-br00tal-no-songwriting stuff...though Nile and CC have more than their share of moments, but at the same time are way too inconsistent to make the list..too much crap...

Nile and CC are two of the best in this pasture. I bet 99% of death metal fans would agree with me. You are alone in feeling that way dude. LOLz. It's cool though.

But it is worth a chuckle over.

I agree with OCI about NILE. What an overrated band with forgettable "songs". Amazing drummer and a gimmick .. but no hooks.

I want PESTILENCE on my list too. Awesome band.

oh, I do love some Nile stuff... 'Annihilation of the Wicked'.. 'To Dream of Ur'... 'The Blessed Dead'....examples of some good ones..they just can't seem to make a whole album filled with stuff that good, it's mostly a bunch of stuff that has that same exact pattern:


- riff comes in
- drums start blasting
- vocals are fast in an almost rap-ish style
- same exact drum fill to round off every single verse
- everything stops, riff plays 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4
- hi hat goes 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4 with the riff the second time around
- repeat cycle
- random shredding
- end song

and I absolutely hate 3-6, out of those, so freaking annoying. It worked ok on one of the songs I mentioned...but they do it like 5 songs per album, little variation in riff, and then on top of all that, most of their production sucks...yeah, death metal isn't supposed to be produced like Necrophagist, but if there's so much going on in the music, you can still have it be un-muddy and not sound like N*Sync. The often muddy production ruins some of the albums they have good stuff on.


Also, people who are really, really into death metal are mostly split about this band..it's by no means a sweeping vote... a good chunk of their sales is easily from fringe DM listeners, which there's nothing wrong with, not much in the genre yet, but I'm just pointing this out..

It's okay that you don't like Nile. No big deal.

But I totally disagree with you.

Each song has a distinctness to me.

But I will admit death metal is not my number 1 forte. That would be power metal. So perhaps I am more on the fringe of the DM genre. I know there are die-hard DM fans out there (like MC for instance), and I'm just not as big of a DM fan as most of them.

However, when it comes to my contempories. Other fans into power metal and classic metal, etc. I'm probably the biggest DM fan there is. But that's just out of those dudes. Know wht I mean?

One band I'm not really fond of is Suffocation. They are so very standard to me. It's not that they are bad, but I just dont feel they warrant the top spots in DM.

They are more of a second tier band to me.

check out Effigy Of The Forgotten, Breeding The Spawn, & Pierced From Within. without the influence of those 3 albums, a band like Nile wouldn't exist as they are today.

I definitely hear the thrash in the death metal. As well as a good portion of doom as well. Especially with Autopsy, and the Asphyx which I am listening to now.

Asphyx are one of my very favorite bands of any genre. major Hellhammer/Celtic Frost worship with lots of doom influence.
