Lots of great guitarists in that list. It's mostly a popularity contest though. Perhaps it should be 'most popular' guitarists.

Guys like Joe Perry are listed, while Brad Whitford are left off. Joe has said time and time again that Whitford is a better guitarist than he, but Joe is the more popular character in the band and gains all the attention and applause.

Also, there are a lot of great guitarists like Uli Roth, Frank Marino, Ted Nugent and Yngwie Malmsteen that are completely absent, while guys like Jack White and Kurt Cobain are in the top 20. That's a joke IMO. Shoot, Eddie Van Halen, a guy who changed the face of rock and roll guitar playing isn't even in the Top 50.

As well, if we are talking "most influential" guitarists, then Ace Frehley is suspiciously absent as well.

i hope that list wasn't supposed to be in order of "greatness" because, i don't see how Cobain could possibly rate higher than Van Halen.

No doubt. Cobain MIGHT have been an influential songwriter, but he was far from a 'great guitarist'.

Eddie Van Halen changed the face of hard rock and heavy metal in the late 1970's.

they are have been written in rolling stones magz. i dont have any edits, also i have been shocked when i saw kurt cobain from the top list, me i dont believe that he is in top. only i copy this article in rolling stones magz. this must be a popularity list because kurt cobain in 90's was popular than van halen because grunge rocks in 90's, right?

What do you expect? It's a list from Rolling Stone, of course it's going to ignore KISS. Rolling Stone have never had much respect for KISS or vice versa. I think it's in the "X-Treme Close Up" video where Gene sez "Rolling Stone never got it, they still don't get it, but that's OK, because appealing to aging hippies is not a priority for me," or words to that effect.
