| I went with Gary Holt because the guy is still writing super heavy thrash after all these years. Even (Force of Habit) was a solid mid-pace thrash album with great solos. Slayer is pretty consistant too, except for the experimental pseudo-numetal influenced (Diabolus In Musica). | |

| I'm not sure consistency is something worth admiring. I'd like them to learn/develop something new from time to time. | |

I'm surprised hearing that from you since you seem like a 80's thrash purist. What did you have in mind as far as learning something new?

I listen to a lot of different types of music. What I have in mind is trying new things on their instruments and not just rearranging the notes on same riffs they've written for the last 10+ years. Using different types of chords, scales, harmonies, arrangements, drum beats, lead licks, etc. etc. etc. etc. I don't mean sticking a tuba solo right in the middle of a thrashy tune just purely for the sake of "open-mindedness".

On the last couple Exodus albums Gary has integrated some new sounds that were not on the early records. On Shovel Headed Kill Machine the song "Now Thy Death Day Come" has a interesting Nevermore type riff intro.

I'm not coming down on you, I'm being serious (for once). It seems like when Thrash bands do try something different, you don't like it...but then you say you want them to do it. Who, in your opinion, has been able to come from a Thrash background, make all the different changes you mentioned, and do it right? |

Well, think about the first thrash records: Kill Em All, Show No Mercy ... Don't you think that "thrash" style changed quite a bit in the next several years after that? To me, "Ride the Lightning" still had a lot of great thrash energy and showcased some nice musical parts without rehashing "Kill em All" note-for-note over again. CORONER took thrash in bold new directions. So did a lot of bands. I also think PANTERA had a lot of talent and took thrash and put their own spin on it and wrote great songs while doing it. It's just that people try to justify metalcore as thrash but where are the good songs?

It's just that people try to justify metalcore as thrash but where are the good songs? Some good points. But Pantera? They only watered down metal and opened the door for tough guy crapola which I feel kinda encouraged the whole hardcore, then metalcore thing. On this point, we disagree... although to be fair I have not been able to enjoy any Pantera long enough to really get familiar with it (I am mainly thinking about Cowboys and beyond). I do remember liking a song I heard on the radio in the mid-late 80's, but I never heard any of their earlier whole albums. On this we agree: Metalcore posing as thrash is boring. But yeah, another band that changed but stayed the same is Sacrifice. Also, Believer (though I am growing tired of what seems like too much effort to make themselves unique... to the point where they are sacrificing music).

It's just that people try to justify metalcore as thrash but where are the good songs? First - just because you don't like a song doesn't mean its not a good song...you just don't like it. Second - I see what you're saying about those bands, and in general, but isn't mixing other genres into Thrash a way to keep it going? Would you feel better if they called it "Hardcore w/ Thrash influence"? I know it wouldn't make you like it...we all like what we like...but I think mixing the '-core' in there is just another example of what you were saying you expected Thrash to do. |

Yes, but not the only way. I never critcized metalcore because it had some "core" influence. I love stuff like PRONG, DRI, PRO-PAIN, SUICIDAL. My point is "where are the good songs from metalcore bands?" I don't mean just decent songs, but songs that are truly good. I think GOD FORBID "Antihero" is a good song and to date is the only metalcore song I have heard that has good riffs throughout. I just think it's funny how these debates go. I state my position. Then you act like my position is something different than what I said, then I end up wasting time correcting something that you assumed .... You pretend that opinions can't be informed and yet you write reviews and bother to ask me about mine. If all are equal and completely subjective it wouldn't make any sense to care about mine for for anyone to care about yours.

| Opinions can be informed, but in the end, they are still just opinions. I myself am not much of a fan of metalcore, but I am sure you'd find plenty of "informed" fans of metalcore who could point out a large list of songs that "in their opinion" are "good songs".
One of my favorite metalcore songs is "Reborn Empowered" by Living Sacrifice. I'd certainly call this a "good song, not just a decent song." _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| My opinion is that good metalcore songs are few and far between. They often have a cool sound right at first, but no structure or variation or progression that gives them staying power. | |
