Are they considered doom? I'd say they were more straight up NWOBHM.

I'm not a real big doom metal fan, but I do like a few of em.

1. Candlemass (THE ESSENTIAL doom metal band!)
2. Memory Garden
3. Trouble
4. Black Sabbath
5. Heaven and Hell (yes, they are two separate bands)
6. Virgin Black
7. Paradise Lost
8. Theatre of Tragedy
9. Place of Skulls
10. St. Vitus

that's about it really ...

Earth(early), Sunn and Eyehategod might not be pure doom, but they would probably appeal to fans of doom.

Nah, that'd be Candlemass' Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. Laughing Besides, I think Psalm 9 is the better Trouble album. The Skull is amazing too, but Psalm 9 is just perfect.

Here's an alternative top ten:

Dream Death
Witchfinder General
Black Hole
The Obsessed
Place of Skulls
Blood Farmers
Revelation
Death Row/Pentagram
Iron Man
Solitude Aeturnus

yeah, I wish Earth was more doomy sometimes so I can add them. Doom Metal essentials Icon_razz I tend to almost exclusively gravitate to the darker, more depressing (being as the title is..'doom') or more experimental doom, with less stupid lyrics, and Earth is both of the former and has no lyrics so yeah. Don't really like a huge amount of 'stoner' stuff. That being said, dumb lyrics aside I still think Electric Wizard is one of the best musically and I totally understand that appeal. Surprised I haven't seen more votes.

Yup. To be nitpicking: NWOBHM isn't a genre. Bands like Deep Switch and A II Z were both considered NWOBHM, but they sound as much alike as Morbid Angel and Heart. Razz

I agree NWOBHM isn't a genre -- but rather a 'movement'.

I mean bands like Venom and Girlschool were night and day different. Venom was more thrash/Girlschool was more hard rock really.

But they are both considered NWOBHM.

Now most of the bands in the NWOBHM movement were 'classic metal' -- as far as genres go. Iron Maiden, Saxon, Diamond Head, Samson, etc.
