Hmmmm, not bowled over by that track.
These guys are a little hit-or-miss for me. Some albums I really like, others are just background noise. Kind of disappointing as I really wanted to like these guys.
Don't think I'll be rushing out for this new one. Maybe later on down the road.

I love me some QOTSA, as well as Kyuss. Also, I think Them Crooked Vultures, if they weren't a sueprgroup, would qualify as one of my favorite new bands in a long time. I absolutely adored and still do their album, I just hope they actually get around to their second and they put half as much into that as they did their s/t

Making a judgement based on one song (and a single at that) probably isn't the best course of action with this band.

I just don't think I'm interested in the band in general right now. That could change however.

The new album also features the return of original QOTSA & Kyuss bassist Nick Oliveri (him and Josh patched things up recently) along with Dave Grohl on drums. There is also a guest appearance from Elton John!

No idea about Oliveri's status with law enforcement at the moment (that LA Times post was from 2011). Josh has stated that Oliveri plays on the album but no word on whether him or Grohl will take part in touring (doubtful).

I know that was an old article, but I recall him having some pretty serious charges against him. 4 felonies. That's nothing to sneeze at. I guess he was aquitted. I dunno.

On August 3, 2012, Oliveri and his attorneys reached a plea deal with prosecutors that was signed off on by the judge in the case. Oliveri’s lawyer, Freddy Sayegh, told TMZ, “Mr. Oliveri agreed to plead to one count of possession of cocaine and a dismissal of the remaining six felony counts.” Nick faces several years of probation and will perform community service as instructed by the court. When he completes the probation period, the incident will be removed from his record.

Well, we can all rest safely now. Thanks Freddy Sayegh, esq. You're what makes this country great.

iTunes is streaming the album for free right now.
I think people looking for a more straight-ahead album ala Songs For The Deaf are going to be disappointed, it's a very experimental record. If you like Josh's weirder forays you'll dig it.

Man, the packaging on the new album is complete crap. It's just a single-panel insert, with the cover art on one side and production notes on the other. This is repeated on the panel under the tray. There is also a cardboard sleeve for the jewelcase, which just repeats the cover and back cover.
Kinda pathetic.
They could have skipped the sleeve and added four more pages to the booklet.

The deluxe LP features a hardcover book style gatefold plus a multi-page booklet.

The first time I heard the album it didn't really sink in, but the second time was like "Wow" and the third time was like "Holy Shit". I love albums that slowly reveal themselves to you over time. I dig layers.
Favorites so far include: I Sat By The Ocean, The Vampyre Of Time And Memory, Kalopsia and the final 3 tracks; Smooth Sailing, I Appear Missing and the title track. But really there isn't a bad track on the album.

I didn't have a real urge to pick this one up. But your description of it has got me giving it a more urgent priority. I also broke down and listened to several tracks on youtube. Clearly this is an album I'll find a lot to like.

I think Josh has been listening to a lot of David Bowie recently, you can definitely hear that influence on this album.
...and that's a compliment!

Very good record, maybethe fact that I didn't really like stuff like Songs For the Deaf helps.

Queens Of The Stone Age landed their first #1 album on the Billboard charts with "...Like Clockwork". They sold 91,000 copies in the first week of release.
Good news for vinyl fans is 12,000 of those copies were LPs.

I almost bought the regular vinyl thinking I was getting the deluxe edition. Fortunately in trying to find one that wasn't dinged up I came across the deluxe edition. Unfortunately it was 50.00. Thinking of just going with the cd at this point.
Cool on the vinyl selling big though.

I dug out songs for the deaf a couple days ago. I bought it years ago on a whim and really didnt like it. But I'm alot more open to eccentric music these days, so I gave it another spin and was absolutely bowled over. Killer stuff. Tons of swagger and a really cool balance of straight face rockin and cheesy camp.
Anywho, went out and picked up ...like clockwork today. I actually like it better than sftd. I'm gonna be spinning this one lots this week. There is something special about this band. A sound of there own.

I love the Bowie influence that shines through on this record. They really pull it off great. A clear favorite of mine for the year.
