I loved rap until about 1991. After that I just got bored with it. I still love the stuff from the eighties - it's crazy the prices some of those old cds command. Tough being a collector of it.
I remember Ice T, Sir Mix-A-Lot, KRS-One, and Flavor Flav were all openly big metal fans back when such things could ruin your street credibility.

Old school rap is the best, anything after the mid-90s sucks (and much of it in the early 90s. I like a lot of the 80s stuff and as far as the 90s I like Onyx, House Of Pain, Cypress Hill, & a few others (however I don't listen to it often, like Ult I only get a rap urge about once a year).

It's funny, back in the 80s I didn't like what is now considered "old school" rap at all. But when I hear, say, Public Enemy or Ice-T nowadays I dig it. Especially compared to the stuff that's coming out these days...
When I was in high school I worked @ a lumber yard and I was the only white kid on the crew. The rest of the guys were older (in their 20s) and lived in Newark, and they were way into KRS-One, Public Enemy, Schooly D. and all the now-classic stuff. So I was hip to that a couple of years before "Yo MTV Raps" hit the airwaves and crossed it over to most suburban kids. When Anthrax and Public Enemy did "Bring the Noise" together and rock critics were hailing it as the best thing since canned beer, I remember thinking "Eh. The original version was better."

There's a lot of good rap still coming out. It's simply not mainstream. Despite never trying marijuana and not understanding how people can constantly rap about it, I think Kottonmouth Kings and a lot of their side-bands are excellent. But they have tons of very positive tunes. I also like how they mix in punk rock with hip hop.
They have more in common with early 90s rap, but they also mix in that So. Cal punk stuff (see second video). Nappy Roots is another newer rap group that I love.
There are others, too, but since probably no one will watch these, I won't link anymore.

My taste in hiphop is is fairly straightforward. Although I love the oldschool stuff that runs up to about 1991 like Africa Bambata, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and Ice-T......I can't stand the new mainstream stuff (what with the excessive use of autotune, generic beats and superficial obsessions with material wealth and excess).
However, I'm a HUGE fan of Horrorcore, the death metal of hiphop. Stuff like Necro, Esham the Unholy, The Flatlinerz ("Satanic Verses" is my jam!), The Ghetto Boys.....artists of that nature. Partly it comes from my love of horror fiction and my morbid fascination with the occult, plus alot of people involved in the scene are also huge metal fans (Necro even recorded some demos with his death metal band Injustice).
Oh, and if you haven't been paying attention to the media, Horrorcore is becoming the new musical 'moral panic'.

I was really into the Wu-Tang Clan around 97/98 (the first few verses of Protect Yo Neck are still lingering in my head to this day) and the Roots (killer band) around 99/00, but beyond that nothing. I even went to the Jay-Z tour in 2000 (Hard Knock Life Tour? I think) Living in LA, just about all my buddies listened to 2Pac, Snoop, Dr. Dre, and Biggie constantly, so I got my fill of it long time ago. As far as rap/hip-hop leaving us in the 2010's, fat chance.

Esham has so many terrible albums. But then he's got some awesome albums. I still say that Esham's "Morty's Theme" is one of my all-time favorite rap songs.
And this song rules!

Both Injustice's demos were very good. It's a shame they never made it to the full length phase.

Am I the only one here that's never been into rap music? Seems to be lotsa folks chiming in about the time they were "into rap for awhile". Not that there's anything wrong with that. I dunno, the genre just never interested me. The closest I got was owning the Beastie Boys License to Ill and even then, I looked at it as a novelty record, like Weird Al or something.

Same here, always a novelty thing. Perhaps if I could find more that introduced more elements, things that would be considered progressive within the genre and really help flesh it out musically, it could actually hold my attention. Of course then there would be the debate on is it hip hop or not.

Same for me - and that had more to do with the fact that Slayer was in the video for "Fight For Your Right To Party"

Heck, I can't even use that excuse. Back then, I didn't even know who Slayer was. It wasn't until many years later, I saw the video and said "Whoa, that's Kerry King!!"

Outside of in or around 20 Rap songs out there, I'm in the same boat with you MetalGuy. At least 90% of those 20 songs were from the 80's, and I chalk my interest in those songs to being a curious teenager, who was looking to expand his musical pallet. I guess where Rap falls WAY short of the mark for me, is the fact that the Rap genre is just way too simplistic. When you see everyone and their Mother Rapping these days, I think it says it all right there. How many athletes have come out with Rap songs or albums over the years? If a genre of music is that easy to replicate by your average Joe, then that genre of music will only receive a passing curiosity from me. Then again, I think we are vastly becoming a very simplistic society. We've gotten away from a blue collar mentality, and we seem to want to circumvent that with what HAS to be the easiest way from point A to point B (and complaining about it the whole time).
Even though I love so many different types of music, I love Heavy Metal because of its intricate nature. I love the fact that musicians within the metal genre have had to work for years at their craft to become at least satisfactory players. Playing an instrument is something that I've tried, and in all honesty, I failed miserably at it. You know what, that's okay. I understand that not everybody is supposed to become a guitar God, which makes a genre like Heavy Metal so appealing. I've been laughing at popular music for years here in the states, and I don't see popular music getting back to at least some form of respectability like that of previous decades (80's and that which preceded that decade).

The closest I ever got to owning a "rap" CD was buying the first two Body Count albums.
During the whole brou-ha-ha over BC's "Cop Killer" track I used to get P.O.'d when I heard some talking head on the news refer to it as "Ice-T's controversial rap song," I'd be screaming back at the TV "IT'S NOT A RAP SONG DAMMIT! IT'S A METAL SONG!"

100% true. It's why art, entertainment, and related things suffer re: financial issues - the gift of escapism just isn't enough on it's own and isn't respected enough on it's own, people my age and younger are typically spoiled, ignorant, and find the idea of paying for anything that brings entertainment to be heresy, and then you have the slightly older crowd who are never satisfied until their cell phone makes calls, surfs the web, takes pictures, plays mp3s, prints out meeting sheets, and makes grilled cheese sandwiches, all in something smaller than your hand, because otherwise it's just too big and too hard to handle...
Of course, we can still spend big on everything that DOESN'T take us away from the monotony of everyday life, and never go out of our way to search for a better way THERE..

I don't really see rap going down. Metal didn't really get killed off by grunge, either. Hair metal did, but it got replaced by thrash bands doing commercial metal stuff, and groove metal. Not to mention, grunge sort of integrated alt-metal like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden (who also did grunge, but still) into the mainstream. Late '90s into early '00s, you have nu metal all uber huge, now metalcore's pretty trendy, etc, etc metalwillneverdie, yadda, yadda, yadda.
In a way, rap may well be past its commercial peak. I don't see as many wanksters anymore who aren't just man-children who refuse to leave their ridiculous hip-hop lifestyle behind.

I admit, I like horrorcore. It has a good mixture of oldschool hip-hop and psych flavour. The only problem is that you can't listen to it without running into a horde of people who think clown paint is intimidating, and that someone is a 'bigot' if they don't like you for acting like a douchebag. Esham, Gravediggaz, etc. are pretty cool, but everything that is in the vein of ICP, or is called ICP just sucks, and is easily more commercial than even mainstream rap.

Today's rap is "hip-hop". Rap really stopped being rap in the mid to late 90's. Like others had said before, you have to go underground to find true rap. Rap back in the day had much more creative lyrics and better beats IMO. Today the message is all about cash and chicks - it's pathetic. Give me some old EPMD, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Eric B and Rakim, Lords of the Underground, Black Sheep, etc. You get the idea.
