| I don't think you can take them off of an iPod and put them on the computer. Its a one way street I believe. | |

| You can only copy songs from the iPod to the computer that were purchased in the iTunes store. It was part of the legal agreement with the record labels, who were afraid people would illegally share files using the iPod as a transport. So as Rex indicated, it's a one-way street. |

Yep - it sucks!!!!! I do think downloading music without paying for it is stealing, but the record companies have helped hasten their own death. They are fight as hard as the movie studios fought the VCR, until they realized how to make a business model out of it (took them until the release of Batman on VHS to figure it out!). The record companies also fought the ability to record on cassette tape - they wanted the consumer to buy BOTH The LP for home and cassette for the car, they didn't want someone to be able to record their LP on to cassette to listen to in the car, walkman, etc.....

| Thanx 4 the info fellas. Yep it does suck but cmon back in the 20th Century you could record an Lp or a cd to a cassette and no one made a huge deal about it. If I was a musician I wouldn't really give a toss if people download my music illegally as liong as they spread the word and come to my shows that's what really matters | |

| Instead of using the iPod to transfer files, just get a thumb drive or external hard drive. No DRM on those. |

Wow, I had no idea about that. I don't own an ipod (just a regular mp3 player), but I've thought about upgrading to one. That info gives me hesitation. Interesting. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

No biggie as long as you keep the files on an a seperate hard drive. I have an external with all my music. The only thing that suck is buying the music from Itunes, which I pretty much NEVER do, so I don't have the DRM issue. Plus, you can just drag and drop your mp3's from your music folder into your ipod when it is connected to itunes

| I don't use itunes or purchase downloads. Not yet anyways. Right now 98% of the music on my home computer is just stuff I burned from my cd collection. The other 2% is random stuff that is offered free from bands or websites (ie 'Headcrusher' by Megadeth). And I'm not in the market for an ipod either right now. Just thought that was an interesting little tidbit. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. | There are quite a few pieces of third party software out there (both free and paid) that allow you to transfer any or all of your Ipod contents to any computer or hard drive. | |

| Your all wrooooong! lol There is a way to get your songs off your ipod. There is a hidden file you have to unhide when you connect your ipod to the computer. I'll hook mine up and see if I can remember how to do it. _________________ | |

There are a few programs out there including Ubuntu.

There are a few programs out there including Ubuntu. Yeah but you are asking him to install a brand new OS. Albiet, a better one than windows IMO, but there is a learning curve in syncing an iPod in Linux and the last time I tried it with an iPod it changes the entire file system on the iPod. Something that he might not want to do or feel comfortable dealing with. I'm not sure, but I think that it can be done through My Computer. Just drag and drop.

| Get rid of the iPod and get a regular mp3 player that you can just hook up, then drag and drop everything from your computer to the player or vice-versa. No dumb, limiting software required. | |

Hook it up, if you don't have iTunes on your PC, then your iPod will read like an external hard drive. Go to "My Computer" - click the drive named "whatever you named your iPod". Click "Tools", then click "Folder Options", on the "View" tab, look in the menu and select "Show Hidden Files And Folders" and you'll see a folder called "Music". Inside the "Music" folder there will be dozens of other folders just named 1, 2, 3, etc (depending on how many songs you have on your iPod). When you open up any folder, you'll see files (either MP3 files or MP4 (iTunes) files)...but they're named things like "KJYBD.mp3". But, if you change the view of the folder to "Details" instead of "Thumbnail" or whatever, you can see Artist, Album, Year, etc. You can now copy/paste any file you want FROM the iPod TO your computer. The only catch is you don't know what song it is until you put it in whatever media player you'll play them with...then the song name comes in. The files are in completely random order with whole albums spread across any number of folders, but they're all there. |

| As long as people don't use their iPod as a backup device there aren't really any other issues with it. People shouldn't back up their computer files onto an .mp3 player anyway, external hard drives are a much better choice.
You can also use iTunes without accessing the store at all. You can rip your CDs into .mp3 format and load 'em all into iTunes for syncing with your iPod. No purchasing required. |

ye I actually had to restore my mp3 which was a bugger but hey just as well I found out but I am actually very sceptical of Itunes there have been conspiracy theories that the government is spying on you with your ipod and Itunes most likely will spy on you on more what you download. There's something very fishy about ipods and very 1984 like if you know what I mean.
