Subject: Woodstock 40th Anniversary Wed Jul 01, 2009 12:09 am
This August marks the 40th anniversary of an event that I really wish that I would have been alive enough to attend. Woodstock. The closest that I could ever get though was the 1970 documentary, which in my opinion is one of the best concert, if not just one of the best movies ever made.
Here are two of my favorite performances from the original version of the film.
Santana - Soul Sacrifice
Ten Years After - I'm Going Home
They released a new 40th Anniversary Director's Cut on dvd that includes a disc of bands that were left out of the original movie, for numerous reasons, which is very awesome to see after all these years, especially with the stink that some of the groups made for not putting there stuff in originally.
Anyway if you are a fan this is definitely worth checking out.
I REALLY want that set, I grew up hearing the concert album from that film.
If you strip away all the layers of hype and rumors and counterculture politics...it's still a fantastic set of music. Born of a time when bands as diverse as Joan Baez and The Who could be be on the same bill.
It is also a fantastic documentary film and is entertaining even after multiple viewings.

I saw a chunk of the "Woodstock" concert film on VH1 Classic about two weeks ago. (Every commercial break pimped that new 40th Anniversary Director's Cut box set) I've never seen the movie in its entirety but it's always a fun watch.

Sweet!! Now I can see Sha Na Na's COMPLETE performance.

I like the original film just fine so I donot think I will purchase another version of this film, despite they have finally added in the Mountain footage, and some more of Janis Joplin's performance, both would be really cool to see.
I saw a preview on TV over the weekend for a movie called "Taking Woodstock" that's coming out later this month (to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the festival, I would assume)... looked interesting enough. Apparently it follows the organizers of the Festival and shows how much hassle they went through in order to make Woodstock happen. Oddly the director of the movie is Ang Lee, the Hong Kong-born director of such art-house favorites as "The Ice Storm" and who ruined the "Hulk" a few years back. He seems to be a strange choice to direct such a film.

I hope this previously unreleased footage appears in the new release...
