College Rock

Anyone else her like any of this sort of music?

Bands played on many a college radio station...especially in the 80's...probably still today somewhere...

The genre (not really even a genre) is pretty broad and encompasses alot of actual styles...but I mainly speak of bands like:

R.E.M.
ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN
THE PIXIES
SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES
LEMONHEADS
THE THE
THE CURE
TALKING HEADS
DEVO
VISAGE
COCTEAU TWINS
BAUHAUS
THE SMITHS

I've never been able to get a handle on exactly what it was. I guess I always thought of bands like the Grifters, Pixies, Bullet Lavolta, or even Husker Du or Sugar. I don't know. From what you list it appears that it was sort of a bridge era between post punk and grunge? One of the locals here was in a well regarded college rock band called "Game Theory", which featured Scott Miller.

I have very strong, bitter memories of battles with the college-radio crowd versus the metal-heads in college. They all came off as pretentious pr*cks, thinking that their "intellectual" music was far superior to our "head-banging crap".

Sadly, I have no opinion on the music because the memories of the fans back in the day angers me and I wouldn't listen to it on principal. A very juvenile excuse, I know, but I like what I like.

I think College rock is what they now refer to as "Classic Alternative". Last time I looked there were at least a couple of radio stations in Minneapolis that played that format.

p.s.- by far my favorite band from that era is the Chameleons; who were the godfathers of the later "Madchester"scene that spawned the Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses, and the Charletans UK.

I dig early REM and some latter day stuff. The pop indie rock stuff ("Shiny Happy People") isn't really my thing. Automatic For The People, though, is a frickin' classic! One of my all-time favorite albums. I love it.

I really dig early Lemonheads, too. Hate Your Friends was a high school party album for me. My friend and I used to sing "Rabbit" all the time! Haha.

I must admit it is ALL 'bout THE PIXIES...brilliantly twisted band!!


it was mainly just non mainstream music....a lot ofthe bands were embraced in the early 90's alternative explosion...some never got the kudos they deserved.

The Pixies are one of the most brilliant bands of all time, Surfer Rosa is my favourite Pixies album.

The way it works for me at WWSP, is you have bands in reg rotion(light, med, heavy) that are played 8am til about 7. Then we have Jazzsides a very popular show from 7 till 10 or so. Then sound streams, till 2am-all request anything goes pretty much. Weekends friday 6pm till sunday 2am are all specialty shows, like mine Metal Thunder. I am the only Metal show in central WI, which means being the only market in the area I get EVERYTHING woohoo!! The industry really uses collage radio as a stepping stone for everthing you hear on the commercil rock stations, about 90 percent of the music you hear as gone through collage radio at some point. Anyway thats the way it's been for me the past 17 years at collage radio-TJ

I just wasn't sure what Laim meant....I assumed you meant LAME but thought maybe it was some hip new phrase or something....

I was one of those rare people who like both metal and non metal stuff....still am/do....I listen to everthing from GEORGE JONES and PETER GABRIEL to SLAYER and POISON...THE CURE to ULTIMATUM and ABBA....

it's something I pride myself on...

Despite the fact that I'm very conversant with this genre; and really love some of the bands (The Comsat Angels is another good one); I can totally relate to Metalguy71's bitterness. I had a lot of friends that really didn't want me to listen to anything but what they thought was "cool". Who cares anyway? I've posted a few times about people I know who get very unfomfortable when I wear my Styx t-shirt; to the point that I get the feeling it's almost offensive to them. That's why it's so fun to wear. I know not many people here like Styx either; but again, who cares? We all like stupid bands.
The thing that I really think is funny is that often some influential arbiter of fashion decides that some band that has been up to that point a butt of jokes; is now all of a sudden to be regarded as elder statesmen to be respected or acceptable kitsch; and then it's ok to like them. I've seen this happen to Black Sabbath and Kiss, and a bunch of other bands as well. Silly. I'm pretty sure that Styx is immune to ever being cool, but you never know.

10:4 good buddy. I'm with ya bro. I love allot of Country
(Montgomery-Gentry, Trace Adkins, Charlie Daniels), I also LOVE big
band (Bennett, Sinatra, Jr) and. However, for some demented reason,
when it came to anything Rock or heavier, I only wanted and could
listen to heavy, speed, thrash and some death metal. But in my case it
was all Christian. That’s the only metal I've ever listened too besides
mainstream radio bands.
