100 greatest thrash / speed metal bands*

* this is some list I came across... interesting to say the least and I wonder what the parameters were in dictating placement ? who knows.

Kewl thing is there are some bands I never even heard of, gonna surf up and see what's the deal w/ them is.

hopefully this will will enocourage debate and interaction between us humans ? worth a shot

I'd say the list is pretty accurate, I dont know about Metallica and Megadeth holding the first two though. I'm stoked likewise because I noticed some bands I havent yet heard either.

There are two Ultimatums listed, which ones the canadian and which is the New Mexico band?

Also, whats the deal...no vengeance rising!

there is alot wrong with that list. many bands that are not thrash or speed. some are listed higher than actual thrash bands (Pantera is higher than Possessed? c'mon).

Even Helloween's inclusion is debatable since they've existed a lot longer as a power metal band than a speed metal band.

I agree.

I visit Digital Dream Door often. I've found the real purpose of the site isn't for ranking various bands, musicians, or songs. It's more of a way to find out about bands you've never heard of and giving them a listen.

Many of the bands listed gave me pause as well....

I don't necesserily agree with all the inclusions or the ranking, but a nice list nonetheless. Especially for someone just leaning the genre. It would give 'em a good start.

Never even heard of that one. Metal-Archives has a Finnish band called UltiMatium listed as Melodic Power Metal.

How did Believer, Ultimatum and Deliverance make the list but no Vengeance Rising?

Lots of good bands listed. I think it's fair to list band's like Motorhead, Anvil, Raven, etc. They all had a big hand in speed and thrash metal. Much of Anvil's catalog IS speed and thrash metal.

If their goal isn't to rank bands then why do it? If your going to, have someone who really knows the genre.

Yes. One of my favorites as well.

Unless you are a fan of a particular genre, most are oblivious to any diffference between say, black or thrash. I found a Kreator cd at a local 99 cent only store a few months ago. It is called "Renewal" and came out in 92'. If I wasn't familar with thier older stuff, I wouldn't if ,I had to label them, a thrash band by that release. Does that change anything about them ?
Most folks hear uptempo drums, a certain guitar sound and vocal style and repeat whatever term they are familar with. A label on a band only puts them into a box and it's only purpose is to alienate itself and it's fans from another box w/ whatever is in that box. It's more fun to listen and perhaps discover something you can dig, rather than be subjective and cry foul if and when you open up your box and discover that the product doesn't match the label.

When I got out of school and started playing in bands other than a keg party band or friends jammin in someones garage.
It was normal to call bands like Priest or Ratt a "metal" band.
Today it is a different story altogether and wouldn't fly one bit.
More emphasis is put on a label than just calling it good music... no matter what the style.

I agree! (at least I think!)

James B.-I understand to a degree but when you put out a list labeled thrash/speed those in the know at all expect that is what's on the list. If you just want to put out a list of hard rock bands then label it as such.
