| It would be interesting to make a list of bands who are unknown, yet play some awesome metal music. I'm refering to the rawhead rexx thread posted earlier on the board. Has anyone blindly purchased an album that actually turned out to be quite decent?? | |

| Back in the early to mid-80's, pretty much everything was a blind purchase (especially when you grew up in a rural area). They didn't play metal on the radio, there was no Headbanger's Ball yet, the only option was to read reviews in metal magazine and listen to that old syndicated radio show "Metal Shop".
Mostly, I used the "cool album cover, cool band name, cool song titles...let's try it" approach. In hindsight that was a rather hit or miss way of doing it...but I got a lot of great music that way...and a lot of crap I've luckily forgotten. |

The town I grew up in is much like the one you described, and probably half of the albums I bought were blind purchases. Quite honestly, I still do that a lot but with the internet I can at least hear the 30 second samples of most bands anymore

I lived for "Metal Shop" with Charlie The Butcher Kendall. We also had a local free monthly called Roxx which had a reviewer who I knew if he gave something four or five guitars it was a must have. As far as an excellent under-known band - I'm really loving Pitiful Reign's Visual Violence. Basically got it because of the samples I'd heard, they're UK thrashers, the Repka cover, and it was part of stormspell's sale. It completely blew me away.

| HIBRIA have had quite a buzz for a while. I definitely wouldn't call them unknown except I guess on this board. | |

| Quick Change - Circus of Death. An album I am jamming while typing this. Good, chugga-chugga, speed metal with clean vocals. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| When I was a kid I bought alot of albums blind, that are now considered classic bands but didn't have much a choice than, no radio play, no internet and most of metal friends only liked what was popular. I am glad I did among them were: Raven-All for One, Venom-Welcome to Hell, Saxon, UFO, Humble Pie, Smashed Gladys, hardcore punks like the Dead Kennedys, Fear, Black Flag, etc usually I would read about a band, become curious and then beg my mom to drive me to the flea market and pick up a bundle of vinyl LPs for cheap. | |

you beat me to it. I was gonna post Ultimatum. They are well known on this board for obvious reasons, but I don't understand why a band as good as they are and who have been around for as long as they have aren't better known. Are people just put off by the Xtian tag? I mean, I'm not a Xtian and I think they are great. I've seen them live and they are not preachy. I've even talked with them at shows and they are just nice guys. I even see them helping other bands setting up and breaking down equippment.
