I'm thinking about picking up some Soilwork. How are they?

The elitists say the early stuff is best and that they've sold out. Practical people can see that the early stuff is paint-by-numbers melodeath while the the latter albums show a band that has hit their stride with creativity and uniqueness.
Either way, I think both eras are awesome. Start with Natural Born Chaos. Devin Townsend produced that one and brought out all their potential. It's a brilliant album.

I owned a few Soilwork cds and they really have become 2 different bands. Earlier material was melodic death metal at it was killer. The Chainheart Machine when I first heard it amazed me and still to this day I think Machinegun Majesty has one of the most jawdropping solos ever created. Mattias Eklundh supplies it. They went with a more melodic vocal approach on the later albums which I prefer a little more. All in all its all awesome IMO.

Natural Born Chaos is my favorite Soilwork disc. They are playing in Charlotte on Feb. 9th. I'm debating on going to check them out.

Figure Number Five was my first and I may say, my favorite. Natural Born Chaos is next followed by Sworn To A Great Divide and Chainheart Machine. That is all I currently have. Speed has a good singing voice which seems to be the pattern with death vocalists who go clean.
