| I don't expect anyone to agree on this subject but I was curious.
Other than "CRAP" what type of music do you call bands like...
LINKIN PARK GODSMACK STAIND STONE SOUR PUDDLE OF MUDD, etc.
I call this music "Contractor rock". The reason being is when you see a contractor working on a house, 9 times out of 10 this kind of music is cranked in the background. Check on it, I'm right.
Some people call this stuff metal, but I don't. It's too contrived and somehow not authentic sounding to my ears. There's a cat that I went to school with that listens to this stuff and refers to himself as a metalhead. I'm not sure why someone would want to label themselves as such but to each their own. This stuff isn't metal, IMO.
By the way, if you like these bands. That's fine. Don't get your balls in a sling over this topic, I'm honestly curious. |

| Like it or not, it's what is considered Rock or Hard Rock music today...calling it Modern Rock is tempting, but all in all, it's Rock or Hard Rock IMO...nothing Alt or Post-Alt or anything else about it... Some would even put GODSMACK and STONESOUR into the Metal category these days... |

| I would use the dreaded nu-metal tag, expect for Puddle of Mud which is really more of modern day version of pop metal. I would also call it Clear Channel rock since this is all they play on rock stations. | |

True. I would also put Nickelback in that catagory.

| I stand alone on this thread but I don't mind Godsmack, Puddle of Mud or Stone Sour, I am not a major fan but I do like some of their music. I would label them nu-metal if I had to attach a genre to their name, but I view them as this generation's pop metal movement. It is made to be radio friendly corporate rock, with hints (small) of rebellion. Not preferred genre but I do own CDS by all three of these bands. Now excuse me I have put my balls in a sling. | |

POM is more a modern grunge band but all those bands are def Modern Rock with hints of metal except for POM they have no metal in them.

| Contractor music! That's funny because I wrote here this summer how I was trapped in my house for three days hearing this stuff while the roofing contractors were playing thier boombox on my roof. I got a headache from it. To be fair there is probably a lot of modern rock that is better than what gets played on the radio. Radio seems to go to the lowest common denominator of any genre. With this in mind bought a bunch of them at Wal Mart and dumped them in my "rainy day" box, where they have been sitting for six months now. Some day when I'm bored I'll listen to them and form a more informed opinion. As of now there are several lesser known alt-nu-modern hard rock bands that I like quite a bit. | |

| For the most part, I call this type of music a cure for insomnia. Each band mentioned has a song here or there that I like but for a whole CD... _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Yeah, modern hard rock sounds about right. Godsmack might fall into the metal category, but that's open for debate. | |
