I got my copy of Sedition's "World of Illusion" album today. Now that I've heard it all the way through several times, I have to say that this is a very solid record. Sedition plays a style that mixes melodic metal with some atmosphere, speed metal and even a little progressiveness in. Its pure heavy metal though.
The triple guitar attack (yes, there are THREE guitarists) is really good, and in ways you might not expect. There are times when the music is slow with an acoustic guitar, then there are electric guitar accents here and there, overlapping each other. At other times this CD kicks into full speed mode with all guitars blazing. Sometimes the quiet and speed are even in the same song blending from one to the other and back again with ease.
The lyrics are a little on the dark side. They have a decidedly cynical and even fatalistic approach at times. I think the lyricist takes this seriously. There's no fluff to be found here in the messages of the songs. Certainly the music comes first; but this band is not afraid to be serious with their lyrics, which I really like.
The instruments are all played well, and the singer is very good; but IMO its the songwriting that lifts this album. A lot of bands can throw a decent singer with three guitars and make an album. But it takes some skill to weave the intricacies of slower, atmospheric sections with mid-paced and even speed metal parts and make it work so well. All that in addition to the lyrical depth makes this one solid record.
