But seriously, I loved Ian Christe's SOUND OF THE BEAST: THE COMPLETE HEADBANGING HISTORY OF HEAVY METAL. Love this book. I bought on a whim, because as a former teacher we had what was called S.S.R. (Silent Sustained Reading). Students as well as Teachers were supposed to read for 20 minutes, so that meant we couldn't grade papers. I took advantage of this situation by perusing one of huge retail giant bookstores. I grabbed this one when I saw it, and enjoyed it quite a bit. The last roommate I had, before he went off and got married had purchased "Metallica and Philosopy: A Crashcourse In Brain Surgery" for me as a Christmas present. My roommate Sean is probably one of the Top 5 most brilliant people I've met in my life. He's a Philosophy major, who is working on his Doctorate degree. He got both his Bachelor's degree, and his Masters from the same school where I did my undergrad work, I.U.P.U.I. The reason I bring up the schooling aspect is, Sean taught some classes and still does for the Professor who wrote a chapter in the book. His name is Jason T. Eberl (an Assistant Profesor). He is responsible for Chapter 12 "Living And Dying As One: Suffering and the Ethics of Euthanasia". Good read, if you're into that sort of thing? One other book that I picked up on a wing a few years ago is "Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey In Rural North Dakota", by Chuck Klosterman. I knew that I would be able to identify with Chuck having grown up in a rural community myself in Indiana. Much of what he talked about, I either experienced in the wonderful decade that was the 80's, or I had friends that had experienced those things.

| I read that book years ago by Ian Christie, I thought it was very well written book. I personally like having reference books on metal and have lots of biographies on various musicians etc. It is funny how a lot of these bands lives and careers are interchangeable. | |

| No I have not read that one yet, I have one in paperback written by Bob Greene titled 'Billion Dollar Babies' that documents their Muscle of Love tour which is really interesting, since no one at the time knew this would be the final tour of the original Alice Cooper band. I have kept the book despite the fact that my old dog when he was puppy chewed it up, but I can't bare to part with it til I find a replacement at a decent price. | |
