| Well, I guess since I've changed handles and pretty much everything else in my life in the past few months, might as well re-introduce myself from scratch...
Name: Shawn Dudley
Age: 40
Status: Single (not for long!)
Location: Los Angeles, CA (almost, leave in less than 2 weeks)
Occupation: TBD - background is in recording & live Sound reinforcement, audio/video post production, mixing, mastering, voiceover recording (mixing and mastering). Some Foley, ADR, soundtrack design...I could keep going but I won't.
Interests: LIFE!, WOMEN!, after that....prog rock, jazz, metal, early 20th century classical and pretty much anything intelligent and well played by humans.
Website: Facebook (pro site coming once settled in LA)
Favorite Metal Genre: Not a genre nazi. I would also say that I'm not a "metal" fan, but I am a fan of "HEAVY".
I try to remain mostly on the "grown up" side of the spectrum, having jettisoned pretty much all "image" type bands somewhere around the end of high school (with the occasional side trips to listen to old Mercyful Fate albums). (KISS didn't make it past junior high, but that's because I didn't like anything they recorded after 1983)
I'm not a "backwards glancer", as long as it's got heavy guitars and I don't think it's sucking my intelligence away while it's playing, I'll probably dig it. Don't care if it sounds modern or if it sounds like Blue Cheer circa 1968. It's the HEAVY that's important.
Favorite Bands: Current: Porcupine Tree, Opeth, High On Fire, King's X (not a metal band, a heavy band), anything with Scott Weinrich.
Past: Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath and Black Sabbath. and anything that sounds like Black Sabbath - Trouble, Witchfinder General, Kyuss, Sleep, Soundgarden (shut up genre nazis)...and all the 80's usual suspects. proto-metal from '68-'73 or so, prog rock from '67 to around '75 when it started to wimp out, fusion from '67 to '75 (when it turned into smooth jazz and disco)
...and SLAYER!
Also what seems like an endless number of jazz records starting around 1941 with Dizzy & Charlie Christian at Minton's...up to around 1980 or so...and yes, I've heard alot of the earlier stuff too.
Famous Last Words: "I used to be detuned, but now I'm back to 440".

| Hey everyone. I'm a long-time lurker and I figured I'd join in the fray. I've been a near life-long fan of metal and I'm passionate about the music and history. The first metal albums I ever heard were Kill 'Em All, Love at First Sting, The Number of the Beast and Rising Force (Yngwie Malmsteen) when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I've been corrupted ever since! The first album I ever bought with my own money was ...And Justice For All on cassette, I begged my mom to let me buy it. First concert I ever saw was AC/DC when I was 11 on the Ballbreaker tour - I still have the t-shirt and the ticket stub! I grew up in the '90s, but I was more into collecting every Iron Maiden and Megadeth album at the time than Nirvana or Green Day. I just didn't have any interest in most of the popular rock back then. Most of the kids my age I knew then couldn't understand why I was into "that '80s crap," but whatever, I don't feel like I missed anything too important. I almost hate to admit it but in my teens I started drifting away from metal to other music, mostly because I hated the nu-metal crap coming out that the press was calling "metal" and it was getting even harder to find good quality music (remember when Limp Bizkit and even Kid Rock were being hailed as "the future of metal"? Ugh.). Plus all the stupid obnoxious mallcore kids started to wear on me. So I felt like I had to find something else. I went a few years off of metal trying this and that. All it took was a chance listening of Defenders of the Faith to reignite my passion one day and get me digging out all of my old CDs and vinyls again and catching up with all of my old favorite bands, and then finding other bands that I had missed the first time around, plus the newer bands and albums, and realizing that the music was still very much alive and well. I'm totally in love all over again. I'd like to thank Scott for No Life 'til Metal and his CD reviews. It's a brilliant site and thanks to his reviews and commentary I've found a ton of discs and bands that I might never have heard of that have become favorites. I've been playing guitar since I was 17 and have a band. Kind of an aggressive, dark, heavy mix of rock / punk / metal. If we ever get anything recorded I'll post it sometime. Anyway, that's my long-winded story. Looking forward to getting to know everyone here. \m/ Name: Mike. Age: 26. Status: In a relationship. Location: Sweet Home Alabama. Interests/hobbies: Metal! But music in general, guitars, old horror movies, true crime, history, computers, acquiring useless knowledge, etc. Favorite metal genre: A bit of everything. Love Heavy, NWOBHM, Speed, Thrash and the heavier Power Metal bands (mostly German), and lately I've started to dip into Doom and even a little Black Metal. I tend to lean towards the more melodic bands but I'll give most anything an honest shot. I'm not a major genre-Nazi, unless it's metalcore or nu-metal. Besides metal, I also like most of the usual stuff: classic rock, oldschool punk and hardcore, '70s progressive rock and currently obsessed with psych / doom rock stuff from the late '60s / early '70s. Favorite Bands: Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Black Sabbath (all eras), Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio (all bands), Kreator, Blind Guardian, Megadeth, Slayer, '80s Metallica, Saxon, Accept, Grave Digger, Running Wild, Riot, Thin Lizzy, loads more. Famous last words: "Shut up, I know what I'm doing! ... AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!" *splat* | |
