Agalloch?

Has anyone ever heard of this band? I did a search and didn't find anything about them on HOM. I came across them on the Prog Archives a while back and liked what I heard. They are a progressive band that has black and folk metal tendencies. I recently got their album The Mantle. I'm not ready to do a full review, but I like it so far. The music is very atmospheric with some heavier moments. Many of the reviews I've read use the words, "icy," "cold," and "wintery." Much of that can be attributed to John Haughm's eerie, unusual vocals. He alternates between a raspy, black metal whisper and a clean voice, which is no less eerie. It's the kind of metal that would fit right in while walking through a snowy, winter woods in 9th century England. Seriously, something in their music makes me think of Old England. Weird!

Anyone know this band? Have thoughts on them? Like 'em, hate 'em, they deserve to be talked about!

I have three Agalloch discs. The Mantle, Against The Grain and The White. They are rooted more in black metal with the progressive and folk influences like you mentioned. It seems like they get better with each release. The White which is an acoustic ep has got a ton of spins in my cd player and will end up in my top 10 of this year.

I've heard a little by them, have a song on some mixe album, was pretty sweet from what I remeber. I'll have dig that cd back out, thanks for the reminder

I really like the Mantle. I just have to be in the mood for this type of music, usually on a grey rainy day, which is few and far in between here in LA.
