What song lyrics have you heard that you feel are the most poetic (metal and non)? For me the most poetic lyics come from Marillion. Their first vocalist Fish was well known for his poetry and two songs come to mind that that showcase his talent (the first one is more apparent in the verses, the second one is the most poetic):

I haven't heard every Fish song with Marillion so I'm sure there are more. His solo stuff is a little too weird for me so I don't know much about that either.

I always offered this one up in defense of all the idiots who claim all hard rock and heavy metal is about shaggin' a girl in the backseat of a car. Much more than the average band comes up with; and Maiden are certainly no average band!!!

I was an English major in college and had to take several poetry courses. Thankfully, I went to a Mennonite college where the professors never heard of Jethro Tull. I turned in at least two "poems" that were based on Tull lyrics. Both off of the Heavy Horses album. This is my favorite.

The leaded window opened
to move the dancing candle flame
And the first Moths of summer
suicidal came.
And a new breeze chattered
in its May-bud tenderness ---
Sending water-lillies sailing
as she turned to get undressed.
And the long night awakened
and we soared on powdered wings ---
Circling our tomorrows
in the wary month of Spring.
Chasing shadows slipping
in a magic lantern slide ---
Creatures of the candle
on a night-light-ride.

through the golden needle's eye
in our haystack madness. Butterfly-stroking
