| I guess late-era is subjective. I'd consider it to be post-1916, or, at the very least, B*stards.
(1.) Keys to the Kingdom (wicked boogie riff) (2.) Joy of Labour (another disgustingly sick riff) (3.) Burner (4.) Killers (5.) Sucker
Inferno is by far the best late-era album.
What do you think? |

| i actually prefer later Motorhead (although i love it all).
1.) Over Your Shoulder 2.) Sacrifice 3.) Don't Waste Your Time 4.) In The Name Of Tragedy 5.) Be My Baby
Sacrifice is my favorite Motorhead album, so the first 3 come from that. _________________ | |

Sacrifice is my favorite Motorhead album, so the first 3 come from that. Good call. Sacrifice is pretty stinkin' heavy. I'd say their heaviest. |

| My alltime favorite Motorhead track is R.A.M.O.N.E.S. from 1916. Besides that and "Ice Of Spides", I'm really not a Motorhead fan. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Say what you will, I think Lemmy's "vocals" (if you can call them that) suck. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Ok, I probably have never even HEARD five Motorhead songs in my life…just not a band that I or my friends ever got into. I know "Ace of Spades" of course, and last year I heard a new(er) Motorhead song on the radio and liked it.
So I'm wondering…are there even substantial differences between early and late Motorhead, or substantial differences between any two given records? I've heard jokes about Motorhead being not too diverse. Consistency is a good thing if done well!

| not really substantial, no. there are slight differences in some albums, mostly due to changes in members & increasingly better production. overall though, their sound & style has not changed much at all. _________________ | |

| There have been 2 big changes in Motorhead's history that have affected their sound, in my opinion.
1. the elimination of Fast Eddie Clarke 2. the induction of Mickey Dee
other than that, they have been consistent, I think. |

| I think there has been a definite change in their sound over the years. Granted, it's not that obvious, but it's there.
Beginning with Bastards, and really taking off with the wicked-heavy Sacrifice, their sound became heavier, thicker, meaner, more dynamic, grugier, dirtier....you get the idea. They started writing songs that were about things like political and social issues (in addition to the usual songs). The tempos varied much more. Either songs were really slow and doomy (their ballads), mid- to up-tempo punky songs (similar to 1916-era stuff), or super fast double-bass tunes. The guitar tones became flatter; almost death metal tone on some songs (listen to "Be My Baby" or "Over Your Shoulder"). Lemmy's vocals went from his higher pitched rasp to a lower-pitch gruffy growly.
Basically it's just heavier and a bit more dynamic. |
