Pffft! He was a kick ass guitarist. Clearly not as technically gifted as some, but the dude knew how to write some killer riffs. I'll take killer riffs and songs over skill any day.

Uli Jon Roth (especially for his work with the SCORPIONS)
Ace Frehley (for his work with KISS in the 70's)

Eddie Van Halen (this guy just made "difficult" look so "easy" and influenced all the Metal guys that came after him)
Paul Gilbert (my favorite speed-shredder ever...and unlike most of his peers at the virtuoso level, Paul actually is the nicest, down-to-earth, non-egotistical guy you'd ever want to meet)

The list of my favortie guitarists is a mile long but these 5 I'd say are my cream of the crop.

Honorable mention: Rocky George for his work on The Art Of Rebellion (contains some of the best guitar solos ever IMO)
