Subject: Die Happy - Favorite album? Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:56 pm
Was just listening to Die Happy's S/T and thinking about how much I miss this band. One of my fave Christian metal bands from the early 90s, if not of all time, they still get lotsa spins around Casa Del Fat Freddy, so which one's your fave? The debut gets my vote.
Release the hounds!!

Self-titled, no contest.
After the first album, creative control went from Doug Theime and Roger Dale Martin, to Greg Chaisson.

Ain't it the truth. Both VOLUME II and the INTENSE LIVE SERIES discs sound like long lost Badlands albums.

Yes, the do. If you go to my NLTM page, you can read Doug Thieme's take on the band and albums.

I still like VOLUME II and the INTENSE LIVE SERIES discs quite a bit, tho not as much as I like the S/T. The INTENSE LIVE SERIES disc is particularly great stuff, I love the rendition of "Temple of Soul" that's on there, it blows away the studio version. And the cover of Petra's "All Over Me" is worth the album purchase price all by itself.

I need to pick up the S/T again. I remember not really caring for it the first time around. Who was the vocalist on that disc? I should also get the Intense Live series if its as good as you guys are saying. Speaking of Die Happy did you guys know that Mike Lee was supposed to be the vocalist?

This is a very weird situation. Yes, what you said is true, and not only that, but I wrote all of the lyrics and vocal melodies to the ENTIRE
first "DIE HAPPY" album (which never got used and I still have them for that matter.) When I took the plane and showed up in L.A. to record, I arrived at the studio and there was already another singer doing the album. To this day, I still don't know why. Simple lack of communication I think. But also, it must not have been meant to be. By the way, the lyrics were some of the more innovative and story-like lyrics I had ever written.
Interesting to say the least.

Never knew that- That is quit wird. So he even claims he wrote all the lyrics, but are not at all in the credits.

I think he meant that he had written them for the album but they weren't used because he obviously didn't record it. At least thats how I read it.

I was just gonna say the same thing
Kmorg took it out of context....Mike had them written with the melodies and they weren't used cause Robin was there whe he showed up.
Personaly, Robin was a better choice for that style of music and the first one flows and grooves way better than the second (IMHO)

Yes, Mike Lee was suppose to sing on the first record. He wasn't given the gig. I know why and so does Mike. He really shouldn't go around making Die Happy look bad in that situation when he knows very well why he didn't get the gig. Doug Thieme has told the story several times. Mike was offered a certain amount of money that he agreed to. When it was getting closer to the recording time he called up Doug and said that he didn't think he was being paid enough money and that he was worth much more. Doug told him, "ok Mike, no problem, we'll find someone else to do it" and hung up the phone. Mike called him back a few times and tried to bargain with them and Doug just said, "no thanks Mike, we don't want to pay you less than your worth, so thanks, but we'll get someone else". He was told straight up he wasn't going to be given the gig after he demanded more money. They were all sort of shocked when Mike showed up at the studio. They had already found Basauri through a mutual friend at that point.
The singer on the first album was Robin Basauri, who sang on all three Die Happy releases.

I've only recently acquired DH II, and while I like the Badlands/bluesy vibe, it can't comepare to the debut, which got my vote. Never hear the Intense Live cd.

Maybe not musically, but the singer has nicer boobies than Robin Basauri.

I'll be the cheese that stands alone for Vol. II. While the debut is very good, I never felt that RKB's vocals fit that style of music quite as well as the more bluesy sound of Vol II and the live ep.

Why must you be difficult and go against the rest of us? Don't you know that you should always go with whatever the popular opinion is and be part of the group mentality. You know who else did his own thinking? Hitler. And look how that turned out. I'm not saying that you shouldn't have you own opinion, but you should check with others first to make sure it's the right opinion.

Vol. II was the first I heard, and I loved it, but the s/t is now my favorite, as it contains what is quite possibly my favorite Xian metal song pairing in "Renaissance/Perpetual Motion"
The live one I can take or leave.

wow, I never knew that about Mike Lee before. I love Mike's voice but I'm glad they went with Robin. He's one of my favorite all time vocalists, secular or christian.

I never knew that Mike Lee was supposed to be DH's vocalist either. You really do learn something new every day around this board!!
I do remember reading an interview with DH in Heaven's Metal around the time of the debut album where they did say that Robyn was a "last minute replacement" vocalist, but they didn't mention who he replaced or what the circumstances were.
If memory serves, Robyn was credited as being a "Guest Lead Vocalist" in the credits of the first DH album.

Yup, Robyn was only suppose to fill in for that one record. If they hadn't discovered Robyn through a mutual friend, Doug Thieme would have ended up singing on that first Die Happy record. I think they didn't mention Mike Lee in interviews because they didn't want to make him look bad, nor themselves.
Doug loved Robyn's vocals. He thought he had some similarities to Ian Gillan, who is Doug's favorite all-time vocalist.
I heard so many cool stories about those 80's and early 1990's metal bands during my time in Once Dead. Between Doug, Larry, Glenn, Jim Chaffin, Angelo, etc. All of them told me some really interesting stories about the band, the road, other bands, etc. The history that band had in it was amazing. Think of some of the band's represented in Once Dead:
Emerald Hero Holy Soldier Vengeance Rising Die Happy Deliverance Hirax Steel Vengeance The Crucified The Blamed Fasedown Reverend Uncle Slam Dark Angel Ultimatum Max Blam Jam
Then there are all the bands that those bands are connected with through touring, Sanctuary, and members. And that doesn't take into account that Once Dead's roadie (Ken) had been a roadie for TONS of bands, both Christain and non and had a lot of interesting stories to tell. He had a ton of stories to tell as well.
